Why won't people use lane 1 on the N3 inbound? (Old thread)

Why do people not use the far left lane travelling inbound on the N3 from the junction with Auburn Avenue to the train station fly over?

This morning in particular, traffic was backed right up from the Halfway House all the way to the M50. People seemed content to sit in the 2nd and 3rd lanes for 30mins or more. Are they just sheep? I know this used to be a bus lane but since the M50 interchange was updated, it is only a bus lane from the start of the ramp for the Navan Road Parkway train station.

You could ask the same about almost every N and M road there is. Lane discipline is almost non existant.

I agree that people tend to assume that it is still a bus lane.
I do sometimes wonder do some people become so used to the traffic that they just do the same thing every day without thinking.
Anyway, I usually the river road when it backs up bad, though it can backfire when the crossings are closed.

I have another question about the M3 inbound. Does anyone obey the speed limits just before the M50interchange? It goes down to 50kmph and then 30. I reckon a person would be in danger of being rear ended if then met those limits. However I did see the traffic cops checking speeds on a Saturday morning about a year ago and am wary but to reduce to 30kmph I reckon that you are in more danger.

Let me put it this way...

I don't overly concern myself about some arbitrary often nonsensical number on a signpost as is the case on many/most of our roads.

That's not to say I drive around doing 140+ everywhere either though - I drive appropriate to the conditions at the time (time of day, visibility, weather conditions, traffic volumes and speed of flowing traffic etc).

In general I'd agree with you but the 30kph limit on the new freeflow junctions is actually one of the more sensible road speed limits around. Some of them are very tight and IIRC they appeared after a lorry turned off because they took the turn too quickly.

If you're progressively slowing from 100 to 80 to 50 and 30, there's little risk that someone will crash into you. If they do, they're probably a sh*t driver and could crash into you at any speed.

Just got stopped by a Garda just now, just after the petrol station (i.e. I was before the ramp to the train station), who claimed I was in a bus lane. Didn't want to create a row but politly pointed out the start of the bus lane sign which is a 100m ahead.

Ive seen that happen a few times even where they must have been an hour behind so they thought stopping cars at 1900 in a bus lane that ends at 1900:D

    Did he/she accept your hypothesis?
