Mondeo alternator problem?

2001 2.0 TD Mondeo problem. Happened once tonight, engine shuddering and struggling on idle, headlights a bit dim. When I switched off the headlights, the engine settled into a regular idle. When I switched on the headlights again, the engine started struggling again. Is this likely to be a belt problem, or an alternator…

2001 2.0 TD Mondeo problem. Happened once tonight, engine shuddering and struggling on idle, headlights a bit dim. When I switched off the headlights, the engine settled into a regular idle. When I switched on the headlights again, the engine started struggling again.

Is this likely to be a belt problem, or an alternator problem, or something else? Any ideas?

It's probably an alternator problem alright. It could be the battery or something else as well though.
