Car break down

Apologies for the silly thread title

Just driving home from work and the car cut out on me, all of the lights on the dash lit up on me, I managed to pull into the side of the road. On trying to restart, the engine cranks but obviously doesn't restart.

It felt like I lost control upon shifting into second gear, it just wasn't catching at all. Went into first gear and didn't catch there either, so pulled in and switched off the engine.

Managed to get the car towed and will be sent to a mechanics in the morn, just wondering what does it sound like? Alternator problems? timing belt?

Car was only serviced about 6 weeks ago. Its a 04 Peugot 307, Diesel.

Was there any warning lights on the dash prior to it stopping?

Could be flywheel/clutch related. How was it driving before you encountered the issue, was there excessive vibration or noise?

They all pretty much flashed just before it stopped. Prior to that, it was just the ABS light. I need a new sensor for that.

Had the car fully serviced about 6 weeks ago.

cheers for the reply, No it was driving fine.

Guy who gave me a tow hooked it up to a battery to try and restart but no joy. Reckons its definately not clutch related.

My guess is the alternator or timing belt. Be pretty mad if its the timing belt after being told 6 weeks ago that its fine.

In what way did they decide it was fine? When was it changed?

    When was it last changed?

was changed about 18 months ago just before I bought it, have the service history and it was NCT'd the week I bought it.

Specifically asked the mechanic to check it out aswell, he knows the service history himself.

Does it sound to you like a snapped timing belt?

Could it be the crank sensor?

It'll not be the alternator if it was cranking, also not starting with the boosters definitly rules that out.

Which lights on the dash came on ??

Doesnt sound un-like snapped belt but couldnt say for sure.... Hope for the best anyway :o

Edit* Its hardly exhaust/dpf/related maybe? is there a limp/safe mode on those?

Every light came on pretty much before she stopped. Couldn't be restarted with the aid of a battery charger either.

Hope there's a solution, never had any bother with the motor before and thought she was in decent nick :o

honestly wouldn't have a clue, ill just have to take a look in the morning and see what the mechanic says.

Hoping it would cost a fortune :(
