I want to buy a nice Diesel with about a 1.6-2L Engine. Has anyone any advice. I was looking at 05/06 cars. Looking some Volvo S40s, BMW 316/318/320 and some A4's. I would love a BMW but fear the repair costs might kill me long term

It seems hard to find an A4 without a ball of miles on it. Is there anything else i should look at? I don't mind Passats either.

thats at least the 2nd thread you are pimping this car idbatterim. i dont even think you are answering any questions, but just posting that car. im assuming you are selling.

the op asked for diesel, 1-6-2l. how is a 2.5l petrol engine going to fit in what he has asked for?

im putting it up because its a cracker, at a very fair price and might be worth considering at that price for people who are looking at 3 series etc. i have a 325ci. the Op is looking for a diesel, thats why I asked how many miles the OP will be doing, a lot of people just got diesel assuming it will be cheaper, when often a petrol is the better option...

I have just bought an 07 S40 SE 1.6 diesel. i was in the same position as you just before christmas. I was only looking for a 1.6 which limits the range.

    Here are my tips

    1) only buy a car with verifiable mileage. (I had a deposit paid on an 06 S40, subject to Motorcheck.ie this car had under 80K miles on the clock but according to motorcheck.ie the car had more than this at 3 years old. following further investigation Motorcheck was correct. Best €36 i ever spent.

    2) the internet has the ability of making bang-up cars look good. ask over the phone are the panels clean, any paint damage, is the interior in good condition etc. be specific.

    3) I looked at another car and it had under 85K miles but no service book. Experience from number one above told me to walk away.

    4) I'm not sure what you mean by a "ball of miles" but i changed from looking at cars which had under 90K miles to buying a car with 110K miles because it was clean and had a good service history. I'm confident I will put 90k miles on this car over the next number of years without any major issue.

if you are looking at larger engines i would give the Skoda Superb a look (even before the passat).

The one good thing i've found about buying a car in the 06-07 years, was that the Celtic tiger was roaring and people were putting every possible extra into cars. Now you will reap the reward!!
