Hi all, I'm looking to get a bike for cycling in and out of college in Dublin, however that wonderful keyword "college" explains my predicament - a small budget.

So knowing nothing about bikes (apart from how to ride them), what can I look at in the circa 200 euro market, including second hand options. I was looking at the hybrids in Halfords, maybe that's sacrilege in the cycling community? :) I looked at adverts too but obviously wouldn't know what's a bargain and what's scrap! Any help would be much appreciated, cheers!

EDIT: I'm 5'7 in me socks, so smaller frames are for me!

    Try dublinbikeman.com and rothar.ie.
Also consider a fixie/single speed. Very low maintenance
Figure some type of reliable lighting front and back and a lock in to to your budget.
You should be able to get something half decent, picked up a semi built fixie myself and total cost after fitting new crankset and chain with lights was €190. Lovely bike to cycle.

Fixie...I know that word from looking at adverts. They tend to be colorful, which I do like! What is the story with single speed, seems like a lot of hard work having no gears?

If for use around city only, and you pick one with reasonable gear they a joy to cycle.
The chain, because it isn't made small to fit on a derailleur, is heavier more durable and because in a straight line lasts a long time.
Try the shops I mentioned and test drive a few.
I have three bikes, the fixie is by far the cheapest but I was hooked on first spin.
    Enjoy the search

I'm not an expert on bikes but i think this bike was discussed on boards last few weeks as as bargain . Looks like a good buy to me especially if you can get online reduction as well.

It was. In fact, I was in Halfords this evening and saw this bike on display. It's a very decent entry-level bike and great value for the money.

If you're buying it and are new to cycling, leave room in your budget for a decent lock, lights, helmet, mud guards, pump, lights, clothes, puncture repair kit and some tools (you mightn't need all these).

You might get something better secondhand but I've just had a quick look in adverts.ie and there isn't anything there that appeals. Good stuff comes up there sometimes - you just have to keep an eye out,
