Fixing up my commuter

    Hi All,

    I got a Giant Rapid 2 on the BTW a couple of years ago. Since then I've probably done about 7-8000 kms on it. I've look after it reasonably well and had it serviced regularly. Even at that it is starting to sound and feel a bit rough.
    I like the bike and dont want to replace it, so was thinking about having it converted from a triple to a compact double (keeping the flat bars and shifters). Full chainset replacement, new cassete and bottom bracket. I reckon this would cost about 150-200 euro from the LBS, would that sound reasonable?

    I'm thinking the bike should feel like new afterwards and will keep me going for another 2-3 years until I can do the BTW again?

    Sound like a good plan?

    Before investing more money in it, is the frame any good? Do you feel it's the right size for you? Do you want to keep it?

    If the answer to those questions is yes, then it's a good plan - bits will break but in general, the frame, fork, handlebars and usually the cranks and bottom bracket last a very long time.

    For my bike, conversion to triple was going to be expensive, so I put a wider rear cassette on, that made a huge difference. The front teeth also wear after a couple of years, but you can just get new chain rings, it's not expensive. Similarly, the front derailleur tends to crack, and the cabling, rims and even mudguards wear, and need to be replaced after a few years of regular use. But if you just replace them it shouldn't cost too much, and the bike can go a very long time.

    Yeah, the frame / bike itself is perfect for what I use it for. I'm going to go ahead with the overhaul.

    Are you sure you need to replace everything on drive train? How do you know bottom bracket is gone?

    Service headset, new chain and cassette, hit you tube, do yourself in a couple of hours?

    I can fix punctures and clean the bike, beyond that I don't touch anything as I'm the least mechanical person in the world. This is a job for the LBS. I'll keep as many existing parts as possible.
