Not sure If this is the right forum. Mods feel free to move to appropriate forum if necessary.

Just after re-watching an episode of the sopranos where they discuss "no show jobs" amongst the carpenters and plumbers unions.

Now I know that labor racketeering involves control of union pensions and strike action, but how exactly does the italian mob profit off of trade union control ?

How is having an influence within them a money maker ?

Money for the no shows goes to the mob.

Also, the no show jobs are mentioned as offering important health insurance, which Tony can't exactly offer in his capacity as an employer.

Yeah but how exactly does telling a group of tradesmen told to not show up for a work at a construction project earn the mob money ?

Who exactly is paying them ?

AFIAK the US construction industry is highly unionised or at least sectors of it are.

I tell Construction Co. A that unless they pay me $10,000 I am going to bring there project to a halt costing them $$$$. Oh and break some legs. Basically the same premise as SIPTU :pac:

If you want you're Building Project up and running you have to give the mob an 'envelope'. Usually a percentage of the total cost. If you're not paying the money you're supposed to - the union call a strike on some pretext or other and the Project is shut down. Control of labor was the doorway in and there were other methods to enforce control if needed. This gave the mob huge power over many industries, concrete, garment/textiles, waste management.

So basically extorting the developer and threatening union action for x amount of dollars ? I think I get it now.

TBH just think Bertie - you'll get it. Mob weren't smart enough to go the route of the planning office.
