If you're running for office, it's best not to make incendiary comments about rape. That appears to be as much the case in Indonesia as it is in the United States.

Daming Sanusi, a candidate for the Indonesian Supreme Court, has fueled outrage in the predominantly Muslim country by suggesting that rape victims enjoy being violated.

In response to a question about whether the death penalty should be applied in rape cases, Daming reportedly said, "Consideration needs to be taken thoroughly for the imposition of death penalty for a rapist because in a rape case both the rapist and the victim enjoy it."

"We ask legislators not to give the judge position to Daming, as he had offended people`s feeling by uttering inappropriate statement," Ridwan Bakar, a spokesman for the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation, said Tuesday.

As the furor grew, Daming issued an apology, acknowledging that his words were "out of control."

"I made the remark without realizing it can harm people's feeling," Antara cited him as saying.

She also noted that Daming is not the first Indonesian official to make controversial comments about rape, highlighting the case last year of Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo, who said women should avoid wearing miniskirts on public transport to avoid "any unwanted consequences."

Herp. Though he may be an exception in stupidity, do a minority of judges have ridiculous views? Would this guy be sending rapists off with a slap on the wrists? Similar a thing to what the Irish judical system hands out with it's ridiculous sentences.

Someone should catch him in an alleyway and ride the arse off him.
Then ask him how much he enjoyed it.

Somewhere in my mind I'm hoping that he meant it as "they can get an orgasm". I really hope that.

Otherwise, he has pretty much no right to be near anyone, let alone be a judge.

It appears that this guy was over-enthusiastic about the possibility that he could be appointed to the Supreme Court and he said something in an official interview that probably sounded good in his head in relation to the death-penalty for rape.

That country is undergoing severe pressure to abolish capital punishment for all crimes and so this guy probably thought it was what his superiors wanted to hear. It seems to have back-fired; everyone is jumping over themselves to get him sacked now!

Unfortunately there's much too many people that would think that way, none who have been raped themselves or know a rape victim.

I know you're right, but how can someone possibly think that way?! It's such an inhumane, violent thing to do to someone, and is horrifically debasing.

You'll find idiots with crazy notions everywhere, I suppose.

Why do people have to come out with this rubbish? It's not a similar thing whatsoever.

Presume there's legal guidlines when he passes judgement anyway. Regardless of his views.

We shouldnt complain too much about our judicial system in this part of the world because you mightn't be 100 miles off there when it comes to some countries!

I'm sure there would be, but I suppose the danger is when, as a judge, he gets to use his discretion when deciding on sentencing. And he may lean in favour of more lenient sentencing and suspended sentences rather than making people do hard time.

I'd say its irrelevant now anyway as I'd hope there's no way he'd be able to have a career as a judge after that comment.

Seems like he is really stupid and is confusing an involuntary biological reaction with sexual gratification.

Enjoying it doesn't mean it isn't rape.

I suppose it's possible that some may enjoy - statistically is probably true. But to such an insignificant level that it's not worth mentioning.

As has been pointed out above, just because you orgasm doesn't mean you enjoyed the experience.

I love the way they say they asked he not be given the judge position because he offended people rather than because of his clearly stellar judgement!
