    Hi folks,
Going to westport for short break this weekend,
Debating on whether to bring clubs or not,
Never played the course so no idea of terrain, condition when wet etc......
Does anyone on here know what condition the course is likely to be in,
Would it be very soft or reasonably firm underfoot???
    Thanks

    Your best options are,
1 Westport championship course, can get wet 3 miles.
2 Ballinrobe in great condition Best Parkland course award 20 miles
3 Enniscrone Super links course 45 miles
4 Connemara Super links course 45 miles
5 Carne (Belmullet) Super links course 50 miles.

So you are really spoiled for choice enjoy!.

Actually looking at the above wouldn't they make a grand list for a short trip away with the lads. Nice mixture of links and parkland and not a weak course amongst them.

I haven't played Connemara(but looks fab from car park) but of the rest Westport is probably the weakest. If you can Enniscrone would be my selection as the best. If you don't want to travel far, Ballinrobe is the best option and has excellent drainage so generally good for winter golf.

Connemara is nice, always dry and in good condition but very overrated in my opinion, some good holes on the back nine but as an acclaimed top links course it doesn't do a whole lot for me and is quite featureless. Enniscrone is a far superior links course I think. Have never played Carne but supposed to be quite spectacular.

In regards to Westport, apart from the opening 6 bland holes it's a very nice track. Never played it in the depths of winter so no idea how it holds the wet but as parklands go Ballinrobe is better all round.

I played Westport over Christmas and while there was some standinding water in parts, it was nothing crazy. Fairway was playable anyway. Not that I found it too often :D. In relation to the course, the first 6 holes are straight forward enough even for me but once you get out to the back 9, there are some great holes.

Another option for a course would be mulranny, it is only a 9 hole course but is a tricky enough little course and is right on ocean. It is only another 20 minutes past Westport GC as well.

You could also try Castlebar, its in excellent condition thanks to extensive sanding programme in recent years, the greens are just top class.
10 miles from Westport, well worth a visit
    (I'm not biased, honest!)

    +1 Castlebar.
I played it a couple of years ago, when half of the courses in the west were closed due to flooding..
couple of dull holes, but well worth it.

I was down in Castlebar G.C for the Cups/Shields a couple of years ago and was impressed with the new layout following extensive work carried out by Peter McEvoy's design team. They have a great finishing stretch of 5 holes which have to be respected in a Saturday Four ball or an Inter Club match. Their greens are the best in Connacht I am told from a few society's that played Castlebar.

I'd put a plug in for Castlebar too, great greens and can handle the rain.
(Just watch out for parking tickets :) )

Mulranny is also an experience I'd recommend. You'll prob not experience it too often. Wire fences around the greens (to keep the sheep off) and the odd reverse divot (sheep sh1t) on the fairway. I love playing it, a great 9 hole links with stunning scenery. There's a pub close by (Nevins I think it's called) that is great for grub after.

Think I'd go for Mulranny if I'd to choose.

That the pub alright. Nevins is a great spot especially if its a nice day as you can sit outside and look across Clew bay and the food there is nice as well.

played there before Christmas. wet enough but to be expected.
i was first out on my own on my first time playing the course, on one hole the green keeper pulled in out of my way.
i hit the ball beyond him and then he proceeded to mow over where my ball had landed in the rough! replaced my ball and the exact same thing happened again. i was, lets say, bemused.
stitched my next shot to 2 feet only to notice that i had actually hit onto the wrong green. Doh
i did not enjoy that hole but really enjoyed all the holes after it. it might have been the 7th hole that i hit across water to the tenth green.

Yep sounds like the 7th & the 10th. very easily done. Think the run of holes from 12th to the 18th are great holes. Particularly like the 15th hole teeing off over the sea to the fairway (that's when I clear the sea that is)

As you're going to Westport, I would go ahead and play there. Great track IMHO. It eases you in over some initially easy holes and then proceeds to kick you as you turn into the back nine, which is a real test, but is fair and rewards good golf.

    Enjoy !!
