Grants - There are two types of Grant:

    1) Maintenance Grant: Provided by SUSI which is a total amount of money spread across your academic year. There is a set rate (adjacent rate or non-adjacent rate) and set levels (1-6) of the total amount you can receive based on your circumstances (dependency, income, receiving social welfare etc).

    2) Fee Grant: Provided by SUSI to cover your student contribution charge to your applied university/college (as long as it isn't private). You receive various amount coverage of the charge again based on circumstances.

BTEA - Provided by social welfare upon receiving a weekly allowance similar to Jobseekers Allowance. Must have been accepted by the university/college and be on Jobseekers for 9 months prior to application of BTEA (unless you were made redundant you can apply straight away). You cannot apply for Maintenance grant while having BTEA but you can apply for the Fee grant.

The above don't cover tuition fees, however if it is your first undergraduate (level 7 or level 8) degree these can be covered under the Free Fee's initiative (as long as the university/college is not private).
