Get the Golden Pages out and ring every insurance company, it's the only way really.

Those S15's are nice btw, my favourite of the S bodies

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13 liam2013

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,721 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

It'll be near impossible on a learners permit, did you give Chill a try?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13 liam2013

goin to go for a full one id be more likely to get insured on a full....they said they give me a qoute but i have to ring them again 2moro

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

The best you can hope for at your age and with a learners permit is someone like XS Direct, who will probably give you an expensive quote with an excess of €3k-€4k on the policy (basically your car will have virtually no financial cover whatsoever).

As has been said, ring around every insurer and broker you can find and see who bites. Brokers will probably give you more joy. But honestly, do not expect to have much if any luck trying to insure a car like that until you have a full license and have built up some real experience and ?NCB.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,721 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

Yeah, I'd hold out 'till you have the full, man. Then go mad. :D

You could try an MX5 on a learners permit, would be much easier to insure. Obviously not as powerful but great cars.

Try liberty insurance..they insured my S15 and i currently have my 180sx with them also. Although, i have a full licence and full NCB. All mods declared, fully comp €600

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13 liam2013

il give liberty a try 2moro id say theres some places that will insure il be better with i the full licence i wouldnt try with a learners

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

To be honest Im not sure you are going to find it a whole lot easier with a newly obtained full license; they will still take age, lack of experience and lack of NCB into account when assessing the risk with a car like that.

    Try First Ireland.

I'm like a broken record at this stage but they always gave me the best price and I had an (irish car) s14.

Welcome to Ireland. Make sure there's no testosterone in your veins either.

Part of me can kind of see the logic (with hindsight!); an S15 is an awful lot of car to be giving to someone who is too young and/or too inexperienced to handle it. Considering the statistics in this country show that younger males are a particularly high risk category, you can see why insurers are reluctant to give policies to younger males on performance cars.

I doubt my 21 year old self would have been saying any of that though!

And I'm 24 with 5 years NCB. - Still high risk.

Yet next year they'll be fitting to insure me.

    Ireland? Logic? No.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,721 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

I agree with the above, the blanket ban doesn't work.
It's the same logic as having no motor way training on a prov' but being allowed free roam once you pass your test, no training and no experience at that speed.

Ireland's motoring psychology, it's quite daft really.

    Ireland? Logic? No.

I suppose they have to set the criteria somewhere.

The criteria itself doesn't make sense either.

I've been insured on a Celica T sport relatively cheap (0-60: 7 seconds)
Yet a Focus St (0-60: 6.6-6.8 seconds) not even quoted.

Both do the same speed into a wall. I don't see the difference?
