How long are you going for and where are you going?

The more information you give the better!

For what it's worth, I have covered over 1000km with my Giant Defy 3 in "Touring Mode" as I like to call it. You don't necessarily need a touring bike. Granted I'm a student and didn't want to fork out big bucks on a touring bike when I could convert the defy to be, as I believe, more than suitable for the job.

Whatever you get, I'm sure you'll love touring!

I got a Dawes Horizon for €999 a few years ago. It's a pretty good entry-level tourer. I like it a lot, but I use it as a load-carrying beast of burden about town, rather than for touring. It's pretty well set up though, including a fork suitable for front panniers.

Strongly recommend Dawes. I got a Dawes Super Galaxy new in ’97. A added a couple of Ortlieb panniers and away I went. I took it on the Camino Santiago as well as down the west of Ireland many times. It is still going strong. How many modern bikes can you say that about? After a few recent tours in France it now resides in my son’s place in France so I can get a few Kms when I’m there.

I've got a surly long haul trucker and am very happy with it. I've cycled 6000km since April including a 3 week tour in France and Spain without any problems....great steel frame.

I currently use a specialized tricross. Great bike, light, strong and has all the bosses needed.

Both Surly LHT and Dawes Galaxy have good reps. Fot that price you should find a good used Thorn Raven. I did. You'd have to look in UK though. M

Can't wait for my kids to grow up and buy places in France in which I can stash bikes. Sounds like my type of parenting.

SPA cycles in the UK have some great looking touring bikes, at reasonable prices.
