Looking at e60s

    hi all...

So, a few months ago i had to sell my e90 as i needed a bit of cash quite quickly. in the meantime i "downgraded" to an e39 520i 2002 (quite high spec) and it served me well, but was always a stop gap measure.

The idea is to stay bmw. i like them, and dont see myself driving anything else really, unless a really good alternative is suggested.

I am now thinking of getting an e60. Ideally, a 520i Manual, but they are quite rare (at least manual). Budget is 5k + what i get for the e39 (i am hoping optimistically 1800 ish - everything works perfectly, and i had a few things done in it at chelmsford when i first got it).

If the car had long enough tax, i dont think id mind a 525d or 530d. however, if short tax, im not keen on going much more than 523 petrol. My journeys are not that long actually, so i dont really need a diesel.

I have some questions though, i remember the amount of research i had to do before i got the e90 in terms of specs available.

What are the trim levels and what do they contain? The most common seems to be the SE spec, however, this doesnt seem to have climate control as they are the 3 knobs? e90s had the climate control in the SE spec.

What is the idrive useful for then, if there is no satnav option?

What are things i should be aware of in terms of running costs and maintenance in those? seller willing, i hope to get these seen by a mechanic before making sure of buying it.

I like them, id like high specs, but budget isnt the best. (i just dont want to be driving the e39 anymore, as i am itching for a newer car).

I think i can't afford an e90 with my budget, else i would seriously reconsider one (the cheapest are around 6.9k upwards - and the cheapest are usually not the best).

We both dream of having an X3 - but its ridiculous - there are none that are affordable!

I really would welcome what people would say on e60s - in terms of having had them, gripes, loves, what the equipment available are and general day-day living with them is.

    Thanks!

The 523 and 525 both have 2.5 litre straight 6's. Not much sense in going for a 523i since the 525i should be pretty much the same price. Engines are reliable, the electric water pump is one point of failure on these,(well the petrols at least). Otherwise nice machines.
