    That's the best result.

Excellent decision (if he wins ;))

Watson and McGinley both gentlemen and will make good captains. McGinley was the clear players choice and the selection committee couldn't ignore that.

    Good guy.
    Good speaker.
    Great experience.
    Monty pissed off.

What more could you ask for?

Great news for Paul. He was very impressive at the news conference - joyful, and full of conviction and enthusiasm. it was the only right outcome.

And fair play to Rory for the very definite and clear-cut endorsement. Saw him on CNN this morning - no equivocating - went up a long way in my estimation (not that he was down too far!)

Was the whole Monty business just to raise some hype around the selection....? It would have been a travesty.

Now can look forward to it with even more excitement! Only another 20 months or so!

Nice to see somebody new getting the nod.

I don't see the need for the Monty bashing though.

Delighted for him, comes across as a top guy and his interview was very sincere.

Came across really well at the Press conference. I wonder who those sources were close to Monty who thought he had the job in the bag....a bit of last minute hype and drama manufactured behind the scenes at Sky?

Interesting to hear the 4 other names discussed at the meeting according to Thomas Bjorn....Monty, Clarke, Jimenez and Paul Lawrie.

Edit: My mistake Clarke wasn't on the list, Sandy Lyle was

A top bloke - surprised Monty did not have his ear to the ground a bit better than it transpired - has come out of this real bad. Too much too late.

It is also nice that Paul has won it in a contest too. It looks like Daren got a tip off that Paul had it.

Made up, nice guy with a bit more to him than just golf.

Great news. Delighted for Paul and his family, what an honour. Very fitting that he should get the job, win, lose or draw Europe has the best captain at their disposal right now.

i think the monty business was due to some people in the ET wanting a 'big name' if you like up against watson when in reality you need to have a captain in pauls case where they will be happy to play for him and has their respect as well, paul earned it with being VC in the RC in 2010 and 2012. it would be a serious misjudgement for the selection committee to ignore the players wishes

Delighted for McGinty but I would love to hear the real story about the apparant "dark forces" at work against Paul.
Big D saying that Europe needed a "big name" against Tom Watson did nothing to help Paul's chances and I would love to know what he was thinking.. Lee Westwood has been very quiet on the whole affair also

I do. Arrogant w****r. Delighted he didn't get it. The Ryder cup captaincy should only be done once as its an honour and there are plenty of good candidates who would love to do it, on both sides of the pond.

    "Man in mind change shocker...."

The lure of captaining the Ryder Cup in his home country must have been a huge lure and who knows what went on behind the scenes to influence his decision to run. I don't think it merits the castigation on some of the above posts.

Am I right in saying that a Welshman was captain in Ireland, A Scotsman in Wales and now an Irishman in Scotland! :-)

Cor blimey, but has Paul really developed a taste for non-job jobs ?

Looking forward to seeing how many vice-team-leaders he tries to get in on the junket with him.

I think he's overstating when he said we've a good chance of a women's medal

Assume he is referring to Ms Meadow who is a super young player.

Nice job all right. But who else could you give that job to?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,138 ✭✭✭SaveOurLyric

Its not a job, is the point. You dont give it to anybody. Its a total nonesense.
Rory cant turn up to play a 4 round competition if he doesnt have Paul to lead him ?!?! Its the blazer mentality in 'amateur' sports organisations where there is a culture of how many hangers-on can you squeeze into a given jolly.
