Are the number plates with italic font illegal?

Ive checked the relevant act, section 21 here http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1992/en/si/0318.html

and it mentions nothing about font. However a guard that I know says that they are illegal.

    Must be so.

I've always thought that any number pate apart from the standard number pates was illegal.

"The total width of the space taken by each letter or figure (other than the letter "I" or the number "1") shall be 36 millimetres."

AFAIK, if the font is italic it will breach this requirement.

I think "clearly distinguishable" is the usual catch all, "vertical or nearly vertical" might rule out Italics too, depending on lean.

Even in Limerick city I haven't seen an italic or "olde english" font plate in ages.

The real question is why would you want italic font on your number plates? They look absolutely awful.

Because he is... Max Power. He's the man with name you want to touch, but you mustn't touch! He's name sounds good in your ear, but when you say it, you mustn't fear, 'cause his name can be said by anyone.

    Sorry OP :(

    Illegal OP....

Illega OP. Same goes for the faux German plates, most would be borderline legal given the width constrictions etc. Nothing worse than a pair on an Irish car, let alone a non-German brand.

Probably comes down to whether a Garda in question is bothered to ticket you for it going by the amount of them on the road, I think its safe to say most arn't bothered. However I do remember a crack down in the early 2000's when boy racer types snapped up the italic plates. Don't see many of them any more.

German plates are not illegal, My car passed NCT during the week with them. (And there very strict)

Once you don't have the stupid stickers or D on the left, Once there done proper with the county in Irish/ Blue EU logo with IRL/ Hyphens etc.... There okay.

There's nothing in the NCT manual about font, only letter sizing and spacing.

TBH OP, A decent set of standard pressed plates are much nicer. (Just don't screw them on)

Without the D, and the stickers, what makes yours German plates?

Good quality metal look far better than some of the crappy plastic you see hanging off cars. And noone would argue that they're harder to read, either. Italics look awful.

Oh ok, can't really see a problem with that though, since it's designed by the Germans to be eaily read.

I've always thought that any number pate apart from the standard number pates was illegal.

What is "standard" though? That's the point, there is no standard font prescribed. As long as they are the correct size digits & upright the rule is a bit grey after that.
Have you ever noticed the amount of cars with the letter l (L) instead of the number 1 in their number plates? e.g. ll-D-l2l4 as oppose to the correct 11-D-1214?

Just like the plastic plates that are on the car from the dealer.

em, no never really took notice tbh.

That's the thing, some dealers put pressed metal plates on their cars, some plastic plates, some have their garage name on the bottom of them (built in to the base of the plate, not a surround). One garage might use Arial font, another uses Calibri font, the next garage decides that Courier font is what he is using. There is no standard used or defined.

    I see your point... :)

Is this one of them things that doesn't have an answer so?

I see the measurement of the space that the numbers should take as the only fact quoted here, so it would seem that you are correct!

Pretty much sums it up, although the SI Acts appear to be the wrong ones:

Edit, here is the 1992 Act:
