    Hi folks,

Looking to get out and hit the some trails for the first time come spring, maybe with a view to trying wild touring. I know im looking at a hardtail but are their any specific brands or models which would be good value/best spec for my money?

Would i be better getting a good 90's steel bike and swap in some good forks?

Max budget will be about £300 sterling. Im in the north so links to ads might not be useful. Thanks.

    Forget about the 90's idea.

Bike design has come a very long way since then.

    Can you stretch to £339.00?

If you can go just beyond £300 you will get much more value in brands like Giant and even Scott.

For second hand bikes, contact any of the MTB clubs up your way e.g.

Try the mtb hire places up north. Ballyhoura bike hire sell of theirs 2nd hand after a few months use.
Usually well maintained maybe the lads in north do similar

Not sure if there are any companies that do mountain bike rental up here, facilities for paid for trails etc are pretty limited (i think there might only be one). There are a few bike shops that do rental but im not sure they would be particularly good value.

would the kross bikes ballyhoura are selling be much cop? not heard of them as a manufacturer.

Don't know, I bought a cube attention of them 12 months ago, use it off road 2-3 times a week. Excellent quality, trouble free once you can do basic preventative maintenance and quick clean after every ride.
    €450 incl VAT

A Carrera or a Voodoo from Halfords would probably suit you for starting out.
The forks a little soft for really hard riding but they are spot on the money.
I've ridden one most of the trails in Ireland at this stage including some events with no problems. Especially since I changed out the front fork!
