My brother returning from abroad tomorrow and needs to buy a car, he specifically likes Alfas 156 I have pretty much an identical 2006 car so we know and like them. How much realistically would you pay for this assuming its in good nick for a 9 year old car?

That's a reasonable enough price tbh imo.

You'd want to check the service history, should have had two timing belt/variator changes at that mileage and the spark plugs should have been done at 60k miles.

That example looks to be quite a tatty one but it's priced competitively.

I'd go in with €1500 and try not go more than €1750. If it's not too bad then it's quite alot of car for the money. You know them so you know what to look for I suppose!

The thing about Alfas is they can be hard to value because it's hard to find a well-maintained one. I might take a chance with patchy / no SH on certain cars, but not with Alfas.

Assuming that the example you've posted has service history, a recent belt change, the suspension is in good order, and the bodywork is straight, then €1.8 - €2k is probably a fair price.

However, if that car needs the belts done and some suspension work you could be talking the guts of €1k to sort. The lack of detail in the ad suggests that this might be the case. He needs to view a few before settling on one.

Don't think the variator needs to be done unless it's rattly (although granted in many cases it will be, certainly by the second belt change).

No mention of when the timing belt was last changed, I'd be asking about that and use it as a bargining chip.

Yeah, but better and cheaper to have it done with the tb change :) Otherwise the little beast will make the car sound like a dieselly tractor

As others have mentioned the lack of detail in that ad suggests a car that has not had the tlc that it would need to be in pretty good nick

That is exactly what I was about to post. I would be surprised if that car turned out to be a good one. Owning and maintaining a 156 is a slightly more involved process than owning and maintaining a Toyota Avensis, and even that is beyond a lot of people :pac:

Ok so the general consensus is that if it meets expectations a price of 1600-1800 is ok? In 2010 I paid 5k for a 2006 car and its been good to me. It has to be a 1.6 for insurance as he is under 25 so cant look at the 1.8 or 2.0 unfortunately. Thanks for all the advice.

I'd say closer to 1800 to be honest.

Check the history carefully, test drive it and listen for any groans/squeaks/tapping from the suspension.

The add is a month old, if the car is still for sale and from a genuine private seller as opposed to a part time dealer I would think €1500 would be worth trying. Most private sellers "sh1t the course" (:pac:) after a few days :)

Didn't notice the age of the ad, that's a fair point.

Could be though that people interested in alfas have checked it out and found it lacking?
