Hi there, my friend is looking for a second hand diesel family car. She is thinking of the Skoda Octovia and were not sure if there is much difference between the 1.6 and 1.9.
Also she is looking at an older Passat, again 1.9.
She doesnt need too much power, so would be thinking of economy over power.
Any suggestions....her budget would be for something up to 2010.

    Thanks in advance!:)

My parents have a 2011 1.6tdi Octavia and a 2005 1.9tdi Octavia and they are both the same power the 1.9 feels marginally more powerful. Both have the same economy at about 55+ mpg. They are a great car and I couldn't recommend them enough. The 1.6 only came out in 2010 so if her budget is too tight get the 1.9tdi.

Thanks, So if the mpg is the same, then the only difference is tax and insurance?

The newer one might be marginally better but there wouldn't be 3mpg in it it's so close. I wouldn't think there is that much difference in insurance there is 500 euro difference in tax the new one is 200 to tax that's including budget increases and I think the 1.9 is 700 but not sure.

Your 1.9 must be on the cc based tax. A 1.9 on the emissions based tax is much lower than 700.

Sorry your right ours is 2005 obviously op if your friend bought a 2008 on 1.9 Octavia it would be alot less still not as cheap as the 1.6 though.

Another question! Does the 1.6 have to work harder carrying the load compared to the 1.9 carrying the same load? Would this cause any problems? Is power the only reason someone would go for the 1.9 over the 1.6?

They are the exact same brake horsepower 105bhp. The 1.6 doesn't feel underpowered at the end of the day it's only a 1.6 but the power is adequate. We have gone on holidays around Ireland in the 1.6 with me and my brother I the back I'm 6foot2 and my parents in the front and the huge boot Loaded to the brim with 4 big suitcases and loads of other stuff and the car had no problem. The only real reason people changed to the 1.6 is the fact they stopped seeping the 1.9 and the tax was lower. The 1.9 has not got a dpf as far as I know and the 1.6 had a dpf they can cause trouble but every newer diesel on the road has a dpf and dmf so it's not only the Octavia.

Ya your correct It's still not as cheap to tax as the 1.6tdi but not far off.

A 1.6tdi CR Elegance 119g/km is 200 euro to tax per annum.

A 1.9tdi PD Elegance 130g/km is 270 euro to tax per annum.
