Shower Drain Smell - Rocking Toilet

Hi all, I live in a rented house and recently there's been some problems with the shower drain smelling. I've tried the usual cleaning it out, and used drain cleaner so far but it still lingers.

I came across this cause online and I'm wondering if it's actually correct as it doesn't strike me as something which should affect the shower drain odor. The link says that it could be caused by the toilet 'rocking', presumably affecting the seal of the toilet wax ring and in the bathroom the toilet is indeed not completely level and so can rock back and forth a little.

I'm just wondering if anyone in here with a bit more experience on the matter could confirm this is an actual possibility as to the cause of the problem? I'm completely sure the smell is coming from the shower drain and not from around the toilet too btw.

Yes its quite possible that the toilet is the cause of the smell. If the pan is loose then its probable the seal on the pan connector is broken thus bye passing the trap and allowing sewer gas smells to escape into the bathroom.Best bet would be to replace the pan connector and secure the toilet firmly that i would imagine will solve your problem

Just wondering could the loose toilet pan be the cause of the smell coming from the shower drain though? Because the drain is certainly the main source of the smell in the bathroom

The problem could be a couple of things , if the shower waste is connected to the soul pipe too close to the toilet waste it could be causing induced syphonage , when you flush the toilet it causes a suction at the shower trap causing the water seal to be lost , another cause could be , if you pop the grill off the shower trap there should be a 1/4 turn plastic piece which you remove to clean the trap ( it catches hair) , if this is missing or not fitted correctly it can allow smells , but not every trap has this function .

Siphonage of the trap seal is definitely a possible cause for the smell but i would still get the pan secured and the the pan connector checked and/or replaced it needs to be done anyway and it will eliminate it as a possible cause for the smell.
