Who has right of way

So, had a nice conversation with a taxi man this evening. Seems he thought I cut him off. When I told him he was in the wrong, he replied with "I've a member of the Garda Síochána in the passenger seat here" :pac: Yeah, sure ye did.

I would be in the "middle" lane in the below picture with the green arrows, the taxi was in the "left" lane with the red arrows.

    236230.jpg

As seen in Google Maps the lane the taxi driver only had "go left" arrows.

As far as I can tell, I have the right of way, but what are the rules of the road in this incident?

If both are travelling straight ahead then you have the right of way and he should have taken the turn and doubled back.

There's a well known trick that if you're in the wrong you immediately assign blame in the other party as they mightn't be sure they're in the right.

Some more detail about the incident might be useful, e.g. which exit and lane were each of you heading for?

    The fug?
What was he trying to do?

If he was turning I don't see what could have happened, if he was trying to go straight on after undertaking everyone your lane, he was a dickhead.

No offense to the thread starter, but these type of threads are getting boring.

you were in the correct lane, he was in the wrong lane - need more info on how you got into a conversation about this :-)

As someone else said, you regularly get people drifting into the wrong lane at this junction so you should always be prepared to give way/blow the horn

Yea you would have right of way if it was i who was in the left lane beside u .. but dont you know taxi drivers own the road so they can do what they want

But not quite boring enough for you to not comment on is it?

    Ironic post is ironic.

Am I the only one who thinks like 70% of taxi drivers are quite an assholes?
    *They cut into lines.
*When on narrow street, and there is a line of traffic going (not standing but driving at around 20 km/h) they tend to just drive out without giving way to you which almost makes you hit them.
*They just turn on hazard lights in middle of street to get people in our out - not even drive off to side or anything (sometimes)
*Don't you just hate when on 1 lane street taxi in front is driving slow (looking for passengers) and there is huge tail after them dragging. (speed limit 60 km/h they drive 30)
*Yet when you move out into bus lane to overtake someone turning right, these assholes will literally never let you get into bus lane unless you force your way into the lane like they do.
*They always beep you if they are going late because of you.

No offense to any taxi drivers, I am sure some of them are good and not like that but I hate taxi drivers.
I know many will defend them saying: "they are making a living out of that", but I don't care - it's a **** excuse, in my opinion they are breaking law when they change lanes/ cut into lanes with no indication or just hold up traffic.
I am glad when I see Garda parked behind taxi and giving him ticket.

They are breaking law and there is no such crap excuse as making living.
If it's an excuse please tell me how it's different:

Being taxi driver, breaking law to do their job and getting to their job.
    or
Being learner driver, breaking law driving unaccompanied no get to your work.

    I see no difference.

    Mini-rant over.

This is just another example of these taxi drivers which OP faced today.

    /That's just my opinion.

Looks this way. Seems he thought that I'd "magically" see him and let him in, even though he was in the "left only" lane.

Ah well, I'll know next time. If they use the Garda reference again, I'll hopefully remember to ask for the number and station.

I would have thought the road markings make it abundantly clear who has right of way? If youre in a lane marked left only then you go left and have no right to expect to go straight.

With that one the two lanes are straight and the left is left turn also - after the junction there seems to be just one lane but it's wide and its a merge in turn lane (although there's no signs explaining this!)

Ive had the same argument myself with somebody.

At that junction. Some people just cant follow the instructions painted on the road.
I think then at the next junction you have the lanes changing direction and you've the idiots who just end up driving in all the lanes at once because they haven't noticed.

Yea that's it. I drove that road regularly and was going mental at cars undertaking me until one day there was less traffic and I could see the markings on the left lane.

Taxi drivers chance their arms there all the time. There's a big yellow box just before those lights that is intended for buses and taxis to merge into the straight on lane but you always gets the muppets that think a yellow sign equates to a flashing blue light.

After the junction it is 2 lanes, the left lane turns into a bus lane. So those travelling straight in the left lane through the lights have to merge with the right lane before the bus lane starts. The lane markings are not immediate and I believe there is a signpost to notify a bus lane is starting.

When travelling in the right lane, if you stick to the marked lane you end up with the bus lane to your left, and a filter lane to your right after the junction.

Point of order: If the lane the taxi was in was a turn left only lane but was also part of a bus lane going straight ahead then that complicates matters.

In that case if there is a continuous straight ahead lane (bus lane) the taxi would have right of way on the left lane.

The bridge is to skinny for two lanes look at the size of the road after the bridge compared to being on it.

If a truck and a bus were on the bridge at the same time they'd squash together.

Just looking at google maps of the junction it seems clear enough that there is no bus lane straight ahead and so the taxi is clearly in the wrong.

There are lane lines that start on the bridge (towards the far side) as far as I know. I think the image on google maps is a bit dated.

And I think I have seen a bus and a lorry side by side on it before.....I drive that route nearly every day

If it was a continuous straight lane ahead there would be no argument, no right of way issue, no problem - so its an invalid point mate.

We are discussing a secondary query raised on thread.

In relation to the OP, the taxi driver is clearly in the wrong, he is in a lane to turn left only and continued straight. On that stretch of road, the Bus Lane opens just after the Millennium Bridge.

Maybe so, When I drive on that part of the road I merge in turn.
Similar to here a bit back on the same road http://maps.google.ie/maps?q=phibsboro&ll=53.365464,-6.271648&spn=0.003476,0.010568&hnear=Phibsborough,+Dublin,+County+Dublin&gl=ie&t=h&z=17&layer=c&cbll=53.365573,-6.271602&panoid=qksitMm5uD6X0M_cn9HYOw&cbp=12,187.43,,0,29.6

The part a bit further back is a nightmare. People don't understand that merging is taking place and leads to all sorts of near misses.

Just to confirm about the section of road past the lights on the bridge, it is clearly marked with a dividing line from the yellow boxes after the lights all the way across the bridge.
There is no longer a cycle lane to make it wide enough for 2 lanes of traffic.
