So ever since I was young I always said I wanted to join the gards I know most young boys want to be in a job that involves wearing a uniform but at 22 the desire is still there, but when I was 19 I made a bad decision and was charged with possesion of stolen goods went to court and due to it being a first offence and the fact that I was never in trouble after or since it was struck out, so my question is does the fact that I was charged with a criminal offence in the first place rule me out completly ?

It won't rule you out completely but certainly won't help you. Make sure that by the time recruitment starts again you haven't been involved in the criminal justice system again for those sorts of reasons and that you've got some community work under your belt. That should help mitigate the impact of having been charged with an offence.

The fact that it was struck out and you were'nt convicted is a positive.

Hi, I have a question about the garda recruitment background check, Last year i made a stupid mistake in Australia, one evening i had a few beers and decided to drive home and got caught, i went to court and got convicted for drink driving. i have a clean record in ireland but my question is will they do a background check in Australia too??

If it's not an official record IE you where charged with a crime and giving a sentence or conviction, then the best advise I can give is just be able to be explain your actions. Apart from one 'blip' on your character the rest of your character will have to be excellent to compensate for the 'blip'.

And yes , they will ask you to supply details of time abroad and then check with the relevant police force. Do not lie about any time away, put it down. It's not up too you to decide whats suitable or not.
