Have a road bike and smallest teeth I have is a 25 on the cassette. I'm currently thinking of getting a 27T. Could anyone recommend where you can get these cheaply?

You won't buy individual sprockets at any reasonable price. Just as cheap to buy a new cassette. Here ya go: 12-27t for GBP15.

    Cheers for that.

I have an 8 speed road bike. Could you use a 9 speed cassette on that or would have to change chain, deraillers etc?

It seems from a quick search that 8 speed cassettes generally arent sold with a 27T on it. 26 seems to be the biggest I can find. Dont think I'd bother with the hassle just to move from a 25 to a 26.

You would have to change shifters to use 9-speed. OTOH, you can get 8-sp mtb cassettes that go up to 32t or more. They'll just be gappier is all.

So mountain bike cassettes would work grand on a road bike? cheers.

I assume this 11-28 would work ok for example

OK, totally clueless with this lark

Could I put an SRAM MTB cassette on the road bike - I currently have Shimano components. Would that be an issue?

I like the idea of the 11-28 cassette here

Yes that'd work fine. Shimano and sram use the same spacing, it's only campagnolo that are different. Be sure to check the capacity of your derailleur though as if it's a short cage you might not have space for larger cogs. You should be alright with 28teeth though, that's not massive.
