Typical maternity benefits (tech sector)

I work at a small tech company which does not have any top-up maternity payments in place. No one has ever been pregnant so it has never been an issue.

I would like to have a baby in a couple of years and I realise now is the time to think about maternity benefits.

    I am wondering:
    • Do larger tech companies typically provide top-up maternity benefits as standard (or can it be negotiated)?
    • Is there a typical time you need to be in the company before you can receive them?
    • Are similar benefits typically negotiable at small tech companies?
    • Is it generally possible to convince a small company to introduce extra maternity benefits in order to retain a valuable employee?

I've heard companies are cutting maternity top-ups lately but my skills are in demand which I hope makes a difference. Thanks for any input!

A lot of the multinational complanies will top up your maternity benefits so you get the same amount as if you were in full-time employment (if you were prior to going on leave).

I don't believe that many of the Irish companies, especially the small ones, would introduce them to keep their employees. If you are in a more secure position then you could negotiate but the bulk of the employees can take it or leave it.
