iMac - time for more ram

I've notice lately that my mid 2011 iMac is running a bit slow. I was thinking of getting some new ram. Only thing is I've just restarted it and open activity monitor. I've only got 1.79 (out of four) gb of ram free with only Safari open. Does that sound right? I've a few little things running in the background, dropbox, logmein but nothing that take up much ram.

Could some kind person replicate the above and tell me how much ram you are using? thanks

    Mick

Yep sounds normal, just over 2 gigs would be expected.

Whats the exact spec of your mac and what exactly is feeling slow about it? (web-browsing, file look-up, apps?)
