I am thinkin of gettin one of these, just wondering what are they like in terms of reliability? Im hoping to get a 2.0 one rather than the 2.2 for tax reasons.

Had on a while back, the only problem i had was with the viscous fan and the climate control sensor.

Great car engine is solid as a rock with good power you defo need the six cylinder model as you won't be sorry with your choice.

The e39 is not without its problems for suspension work and the likes of metal brake pipes
I've served my time on these models so I know them inside out.

A few hundred between the tax bands is the least of your worries. If you are running one of these on a budget I would say forget it.

2 litre is a 6 cylinder, 2.2 is 6 cylinder. With the weight of that car, you'd be much better off with the 2.2 as it will be better on fuel compared to the 2 litre. Yes, I did say it would be BETTER on fuel.

My folks had one a few years ago and they loved it. It's one of BMW's nicest designs ever.

    520i is a 6 cyl, both in 2.0 and 2.2 in E39 guise. 520d is a 4 pot.... ;)

The pre-facelift 520 (2.0) was putting out only 150bhp while the facelift 2.2 was 170bhp I think, same as the pre-facelift 523 (2.5). I hear the 2.2 burns oil like fvck though but I would still have one. ;)

The folks only came to their sense with the E39. Before that they had an E34 518i :pac:

I drove one of them once - even more underpowered than the 2L E39 520. There should be a power to weight threshold for all cars IMO.

Have had my 03 E39 520 (2.2) for just over a year now.

Good points : Smooth power delivery, comfortable, timeless design
Bad points : Fuel consumption, oil consumption, high tax, expensive suspension fixes

To the OP these are expensive cars to run and keep running smoothly. If costs are a concern look at something else
