Forget a saloon, a hatch back will make things a lot easier when hauling buggies, changing bags etc in and out. Focus/Golf/Corolla hatch have small-ish boots. Have a look at the next class up, Mondeo, Avensis etc (Passat do not have a hatch back). I had a Mondeo saloon for our first child, then got a hatchbach, same size boot, but 10 times easier to get access to.

With all the stuff that comes with young children you really should be looking at a hatchback rather than a saloon. While the boot in a saloon is deep access to them is generally narrow especially for a buggy. Ford Focus is a good choice but 1.4 litre model will struggle on the motorway.

forget a focus saloon.. or even a focus estate for that matter
The focus estate actually has a fairly small boot.

how about an older (~2002) skoda octavia estate.. shed loads of room

I'd of said a standard octavia hatchback would have loads of space big boot. I don't think an estate is necessary unless you want one. You would easily get a octavia 2004 for your money I assume your looking for a petrol.

with babies etc room to move int he back is more important than boot space.

My sister moved to a Verso when she had her 3rd and thinks its amazing.
Very easy to get them all in and out, and collapsible seats in the boot for loads of storage (buggies, etc)
