    Hi,

I am travelling to Fuertaventura (Canary Islands) in March, but my passport has expired. With Fuertaventura being in the E.U can I use my Polish national I.D card to travel there instead of my passport. I am traveling there with Ryanair and back with Aer Lingus.

    Many thanks

You must have a valid passport to fly on Ryanair. No ifs and or buts about it. They are very inflexible about that. Your destination being within the EU is irrelevant.

Edit. Correction. A state ID card from Poland is ok to fly with Ryanair on. A drivers lisc is not, but the state issued ID card is ok.

Thanks for your feedback, however, on Aer Lingus's website it says:

    http://www.aerlingus.com/i18n/en/htmlPopups/passport_visa_information.html

Passengers travelling to Spain are required to provide Advance Passenger Information. This information is compulsory and is required for the purposes of ensuring aviation safety and security. You can add this information to your booking by going to the aerlingus.com homepage and select 'Manage Booking'. Below is a list of the information required:
    Full given names
    Surname
    Nationality
    Date of birth
    Passport number

I've provided this info - I entered National ID No. instead of Passport No. and the form was not rejected.

I am though afraid that I will not be able to check in with NATIONAL ID.

Has somebody travelled to Canary Island with Aer Lingus recently using NATIONAL ID.

    Many thanks all

That will satisfy Ryanair's requirement as far as identity is required so, for example, would allow you to travel on a Ryanair flight from Dublin to a destination where a passport is not required e.g. anywhere in the UK or Ireland but...

As Ireland is outside the Schengen agreement zone, a passport is mandatory for everyone travelling from Ireland to Spain, regardless of their nationality.

You won't be allowed into Spain from a non-Schengen country without a passport, that effectively means that no carrier (airline) will take you on board so you won't get past the gate in Dublin airport.

OP, you say your passport has expired but I bet it's your Polish passport and not the national ID card that got you into Ireland in the first place.

OP your National ID card is perfectly fine for travel to Spain and the Canary Islands. Disregard coylemj's reply. It's nonsense.

    Thank you!

Indeed it is. Disappointing that someone would post misleading information like this.

    The basic position.
EU nationals are only required to produce evidence of their EU nationality and identity in order to be admitted to any EU Member State. This evidence can take the form of a valid national passport or national identity card. Either is acceptable

It states national identity card which we don't have. A drivers licence is a dept of environment licence and not a national identity card. So for Irish citizens only a passport will do.
