Hitchhiking in Ireland

    Hi all.
Im going to go for a short break to the Burren in Clare in a few weeks and though I know the area well I havent been there in a few years.
Weather permitting i was hoping to walk over the mountains on a path I used to go on as a child from Fanore to Ballyvaughan, stop off and then relax with some food and a pint at the end to thaw out.
    There in lies the problem.
Its way too far to walk back again and we only have 1 car. I suggested simply hitchhiking back, its fine, used to do it as a kid. My girlfriend (who's American) shrieked and said absolutely no way but I said nah nah this is the west of Ireland not the States, its a done thing.
But having spoken to a few people they said folks are alot less inclined to pick up hitchhikers these days and while im sure we wont be lucky enough to get the first car that passes I really dont want to be walking up the side of the road for hours in the cold with a cranky girlfriend going I told you so.
I know its a pretty deserted spot in February but does anybody know if its an option? Its a hell of a beautiful walk and I would love to show it off but of course theres always options.
Does anybody know if its still done in that area and is it safe and will we get picked up???
    Many thanks

Being from the west I can say it is in option but if you are in a pub you can ask around and see if anyone is heading back that way and I'm sire you can get a lift. As with all hitchhiking its a roll of the dice if you get picked up or not but from what I hear not alot of people do it anymore so you might need a plan b.

Haven't tried it in Ireland in about 10 years, but I'd be surprised if it's a problem TBH... Here in America I pick up hitchhikers when I see them, and I know people who have hitchhiked coast-to-coast, so I think you'll be fine
