This looks hard this year but no hill top finish. Anyone planning on doing it?

I'd love to but the timing is terrible for me, hope to make it back own to Beara again this year if the Rebel Tour is held there again.

It's a nice course, twice over the Caha Pass and once over the Healy without having to head out over the "bumps" at Allihies.

Great cycling country if the weather is half right.

I have made the very questionable commitment to doing the "non-etape" version of this. I nearly dropped my bag of chips when I saw the profile of stage 2.

    Hi guys,

Could I please get a bit of advice here. I'm tempted to try the race. Not a very experienced cyclist, did a few adventure races, and have a nice road bike. Good general fitness and am currently training for London marathon in April, eta 3:10. Is the Etape Rás Mumhan an actual race for real competitive cyclist folks or will there be people like myself out for a jaunt too?

I saw posts elsewhere that there are packs lead by cars on this but can't see anything about that on the website.

Also complete novice question but are there stops on the cycle (and other similar cycles) for water and salts? Do people stop for actual grub en route or is it like a Marathon that you keep going until the end?

    Thanks,
    Gumby.

Etape Ras Mumhan is a timed sportive. It is not a race.
In it's two years existence it attracts a mix of cat 3&4 racers (ie not good enough/prepared enough for the actual race), leisure cyclists from the fair-weather to th committed.
I have done it for two year and for much of it it is not exactly far from rave pace.
First 20k last year was done at an avg pace of 35k plus into a block headwind.
The actual race is the Ras Mumhan. This is a very well established race on the calendar attracting many of the top 1st & 2nd cat riders with a fair few international teams.

I have watched it for past four years. It is pure elemental savagery. A great spectacle.

In the Etape there are very basic water and sandwich stops at 1/3 and 2/3rds of the way thru. People stop for about 5mins.

The finish has full shower facilities followed by a hot meal - usually a good beef stew.

Great event - well worth doing IMHO.

Yes, very good event but stewarding and signposting was very iffy over last two years. Last year the slower group went wrong route and the other way around the year before (or was it the other way around). Anyway, check route yourself beforehand.

just looking at this event and wondering about doing it. the pace is a bit off putting though from what ROK ON is saying:eek:. What would be a typical whole route average? is there a sweeper bus?

Any boardsies doing this be any chance?
Looks like I'll be in Cork for Easter weekend and Kenmare's a handy hour away. Have never cycled the Beara peninsula and have always wanted to.

Did this last year and had my only DNF in a sportif tring to hang on to that 'rocket gang'. Ended up utterly wasted after only 60km.

New route is like Rebel tour but without the Allihies to Eyries section. Did most of it in January and it is not as tough as the rebel tour but thats a bit like saying being shot is not as bad as being hung!

The Caha pass from Kenmare is not steep but I clocked 18km from Kenmare to summit, all drag and your straight into it. The return trip over the Caha pass at the end is going to be a sufferfest.

Route marking never been a strong point for this sportif so maybe bring a wee route card. The main turns will be at Casteltownbere and then the turn for the healy pass...the latter is easily missed when your tired and the former is hard to spot.

The turnout for this event is never massive (in the An Post sense) and the spread in talend seems to be wide so suggest you find a group at your level and try and stay together for the day. Its a long day, took myself and the son over 7 hours in January, with stops. He's attempting the full race this year....make a man of him, I expect.

Oh, also, the scenary on this one is utterly stunning, IMO. Now can we please have some sun?

Couldn't see it on the website so contacted them about registration times:

Registration will be on from 7am to 8.30am with the event starting at 9am sharp

As above hopefully it'll get a little warmer next week and with little training this is going to be tough!

Does anybody know if the 90km Challenge route has been cancelled? Looks like registration has been suspended on the website.

This was posted on the Etape Ras Mumhan Facebook page:-

Hey guys, just to clear up any confusion the etape Challenge on the 30th has been cancelled. this was the 90km, shorter, version, of the Etape. We cancelled it due to low registration numbers for this option. As of Friday only 7 people had registered. All have been contacted and 5 of those 7 have opted for the longer version. We apologise for any convenience but just to state again the the Etape Challenge will NOT be taking place.

I hope there will be a good turn out on the day for the full etape.

Just back from this, tough but great day on bike.
Caha peninsula is really out on its own, love going down there.
Passed the resl race on way back into Glengarriff, sweet jesus, that was sobering, they were doing some clip.
Went around in 5 35 moving with next to no stop, they were slightly over 4 I think!
Definitely one for next year again

Also stew was savage afterwards, in a decent size bowl to!
