Ski hire prices

Going to St Anton in two weeks and I'm looking at booking the gear in advance online. I've done this before and it usually works out under €100 for skis, boots, helmet and locker. St Anton seems to be much more expensive - getting quotes of 150-200.
Has anyone got a better deal on gear in St Anton and does it really make a difference what sort of skis you get because there's quite a difference in price.

We're heading there ourselves in a week (YAY!) but I've done some pretty extensive research and it seems there is definite cartel amongst the ski shops i town. The prices are identical, down to the cent! The best deals I can find is 10% off Intersport or 15% of Skiset (Sport Alber, using 'FACEBOOK' promo code) In general, it's an expensive resort, so I'd say about 180EUR is what you might expect to pay for rental of premium gear! HTH.

BTW we we'd get the 'premium' skis - they're waxier & edged sharper.

Have skied St Anton over 100day, and it is one of the most expensive resorts in Europe for ski hire. I dont know how they get away with this as it's not comparable with other resorts. Therefore it's being controlled locally. I don't hire there but with groups I have brought there, I avoid hiring direct from the shops.
The cheapest ski rental is available from skiholidayextras.com, which last time I checked was better than skiset, even with discount code.
Unless you are going off piste, you don't need to get the premium/prestige ski. The mid level is good enough even for off piste and fast piste skiing. No issue with wax or grip -if you don't like them, feel there is no grip-get them waxed (free) or change skis.

Cheese Princess: Nope thats St Anton for you every June all its operators sit down together and agree prices for the year! Ski hire in Lech Zurs and St Anton is operated by 3 families!! Discounts are hard to come bye.

Nope not the case all ski across the levels at ski rentals get run through a Winterstiger machine given them a sharp edge and a wax all the same.

The difference will be in the quality of the ski core and the binding and a softness that comes from use over time. Some Entry level skis are last years premium skis.

Premuim skis tend to be higher end ski and stiffer so beginners will find them more difficult to use and learn on.

    .

Hey! I was wondering about skiholidayextras - I saw them, but have never used them. There was a decent discount a few months back, but it seems to have gone up in the last month or so. Are they kosher?

What's everyone's thoughts on second hand equipment?

I've seen a secondhand pair of boots (advertised as being used for 1 week). I might go and try on. If they fit & I can get them for the cost of a couple of weeks rental??? I think it might be a better option than rental boots, even though I don't think I'll get to go to the snow this year.

Fattes, I'm looking for your words of wisdom, but bare in mind I am a very casual skier, thanks.

3greenrizla's; It’s a mixed bag to be honest especially with boots, unless you can try them on before you buy I would not recommend it (See the bootfitting thread sticky)

If you can see them a couple of things to look out for, Visable wear and tear. Check the soles of the boots are they well worn etc, can you still read the size/numbers on the boot on both the sole and below the ankle on the rear hill.

For boots as new as the advertiser claims most of the size stickers etc should be still on them. But if someone is selling boots that quickly either A they don’t fit them B they got the wrong boot or C they need the money. A & B should be enough to show why you don’t buy boots on line J

3greenrizla's; I bought my boots while skiing We went on the 16th march one year and the sports shops were selling all their gear at 50% off. I got a pair of salamons with boot bag for 120 euro.
