Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI DSG or 1.4 TSI DSG

I'm thinking of buying a new VW Golf in 2013.
either a Golf 2.0 TDI DSG or 1.4 petrol TSI DSG.

    Both have similar performance/economy.

My annual mileage is low and I'm wondering if the dearer diesel will be worth the extra outlay and hold a better residual value in two or three years time?

My local VW dealer thinks the diesel is best for residual value but is he right?

Will the DSG affect resale value versus a manual box?

    Any opinions/advice welcome.

If your driving is all local get the petrol as otherwise you will be replacing the dpf regularly.

I currently have a 105 bhp Jetta diesel and do enough of mixed driving to avoid problems with replacing the dpf, so I don't think that would be an issue.

I'm more concerned with DSG trans. being hard to resell in 2-3 yrs. time

A 2.0 TDI with low miles and DSG would make very strong money. You will have a 3 year warranty on it so problems with DPF are not going to a cost for you.

The new 1.4 with cylinder re-activation worries me a bit, its great on paper but I'd prefer not to be one of the first people buying one. You could consider the 1.2 TSI DSG - will be a lot cheaper than the 2.0 and performance would be as good as the Jetta

I'm hoping for a little more poke this time round. If I do buy a 2.0 DSG, it will likely be my last time getting a nippy car :)

You could be paying big time for that DSG poke, there is a thread around somewhere on boards Motors about the USA insisting on VW applying a 10 year warranty on the DSG box given the failure rate and associated repair cost. Do your reasearch.

Sounds discouraging alright. Have there been many issues with VW DSG cars in Ireland? How has VW.ie been with customers?

From my limited research it seems to be the 7 speed DSG transmission that's the most troublesome. The 6 speed seems to be much more reliable.

I asked about their stance on the DSG issue recently and got told it wasn't their problem and they were only interested in me paying to get mine looked at. I asked why they don't honour the same guarantee as the other countries and got no reply. In saying that, my 08 has over 120,000 KM on it and is smooth as silk. And supposedly the gremlins were sorted by then and should still be.

Ditto... 06 Passat with the 2.0 TDI DSG and no issues at all with over 233,000 km on the clock

But it is serviced on time by a main dealer every few months which definitely helps
