Start off with a white backdrop and a couple of strobes

Strobes as in permanent off camera studio flashes. So the things that look like this
    flashvstrobe.jpg

Or else you can get two regular camera flashes, and a wireless trigger. Basically just try get two controllable light sources which will allow you to light your subject however you want. Did you want a professional studio, or just a place in your house to take pictures? I'd go the off camera flash route if it's for at home

You don't need much. A smooth white surface will do just fine. I've done professional work with cheap rolls of paper I got for cheap from the local newspaper's office with some strong tape. I prefer black walls on the sides to control light better but it all depends on what you want to do.

You can pick up cloth backdrops that work out well as well. Though I would not go pure white muslin. As previously advised get yourself some speedlights (flashes for your camera model) and a couple of radio triggers. Since it is a studio setup you can use the basic radio triggers as you will really only need to have your flashes in manual and not TTL. TTL triggers are a lot more expensive and are only really needed when outdoors and moving about as opposed to a fixed environment. Photosel have a cheap studio setup on Amazon. A black background might be good to start especially if budget only allows one speedlight. I seem to need more than one speedlight when using a pure white background.

I'd be interested to hear the studio setups out there.

If you are using speedlights you might want to invest in a battery pack to lower recycle time. Using normal batteries you may find the flash cannot recycle fast enough and your flash exposure varies from shot to shot.

not sure what the quality is like, but seamlessphoto.com is an irish company that have their own brand flash triggers, flash accessories and studio kits that seem to be reasonably priced. (i have no connection to them and haven't purchased from them yet but someone here might have - i only saw them featured as a start-up in a newspaper before christmas)

You would most likely get one of these in Peats or Maplin. If you are handy with a soldering iron it should not take too long to replace.

    Or even in Radionics ..

    Hi tulisa0709

Basically the equipment you need is going to be dictated by what you're thinking of doing in the future.
You can set a simple home photography studio with a stand, umbrella, bracket, flashgun, reflector, triggers and use a bed sheet (for example) for background. If you want a white background on your photography you can also buy some desk lamps and fit them with eco bulbs (white color).
If your home studio is going to be a keeper you'll still need the triggers and the reflector but you can take a look at something like these, a set with two strobes, softboxes and stands in around 600€
