I'm trying to sell my 2005 Renault Megane
i have it on the following sites since the start of December
    donedeal.ie
    dealtime.ie
    adverts.ie
    gumtree.ie
I haven't had any interest, I'm looking for €3500 for it its in good condition
Has anyone any advice i really need to get rid of it (bought a smaller car -thanks to my mam & dad and really want to pay them back asap), is it really a bad thing to look towards the Cash for Cars people?

    thanks a mill
    :D

A car will sell if its priced right. You want rid of yours youre going to have to drop the price to attract attention.

Meganes are known to be unreliabs so are hard to sell, alot of the ones on donedeal there are half the price of the op.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,313 ✭✭✭Mycroft H

Any link to the advert and we could point out some way to improve it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,482 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Too expensive Op, Meganes of that vintage are selling for well below €3k. They are difficult enough to sell at that too due to their reputation for having electrical problems.

We sold a 2004 Megane estate diesel for 2400 euro last August but it was a 1.5 dci. Not too bad since we paid less than 2k for it. Just so you get a rough idea. In saying all that for 2400 we sold it in 10 hours on donedeal and got about 5 people who wanted to buy it we just wanted it gone.

Very surprised at what they are worth.

Get 2 years NCT on it for a start.

Just because you need €3500 doesn't mean someone will pay it. Your going to have to be realistic. Even the fact that you have it advertised for the €3500 . Very few people will pay the full asking price someone has. People will expect to haggle . If it was €4000 the right buyer might go €3500. (I'm not saying you should price it at €4000, cos youll get even less interest)

I bought a 2004 Peugeot partner car last April and it had 2 years nct , 2 brand new tyres, and was in sound condition and guy was trying to get 2500 for it or ages, after months he eventually sold it to me for 1300 , I don't think you'll get anything close to it sorry....

Don't get me wrong , I really hope you sell it but I just can't see it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,827 ✭✭✭✭road_high

Pics not great either. Car looks dirty to me from the side and scruffy alloys.

Is that the MPV van thingy? I'd rate that as far more desirable vehicle than a petrol 05 Megane too.

Which equals all kinds of possible bills for any new owner like tyres etc. A definite no no at this age of car.

Yeh, I will say it had a couple of slight scuffs on the one side, not serious, and it had done 150k . Colour was a horrible green as well , but I'm chuffed with it. I've driven it since and had no problems . The seats lie flat as well so its like a van.

The owner told me he had had enough of trying to sell it , it was a crap market to sell anything.

I saw since the op cars doesn't have a nct ... Aaaghhhhh come on op , you have to at least make a effort to sell car. Nobody is gona she'll out any money if car doesn't have a nct

Yea they were old school Peugeot so very relaible, nice simple motoring I'd say.

I agree, selling an undesirable without up to date NCT is suicide really.

Taking pictures in the wet puts people off straight away, it's assumed that you're trying to hide bad paintwork.

    No pictures of the interior.

The car, and wheels appear dirty.

After that, you're just going to have to drop the price. Not only will the max price someone is willing to pay continue to fall with time, you don't have use of that money untill you sell it.

ie: Even if you eventually get €3,500, what use is that in 6 months time? Better to get €2,500 now and be done with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,313 ✭✭✭Mycroft H

A few pics of the interior wouldn't go amiss along with the advice above. I'd drop the price by 750 and see what bites

Sorry but in its current form 2500 is totally unrealistic , I'd say the op will be lucky to get 1700 . It's just my opinion, feel free to disagree

Take the reason for sale out of the description; its just unnecessary waffle that no one needs or wants to read.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,435 ✭✭✭areyawell

Needs a new NCT, price dropped by a thousand at least.

Meganes are not the most popular car these days!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,647 ✭✭✭thenightrider

Just because you want €3500 does not mean you will get that or close to it if i was in the market for a Megane i would not even ring you to see the car as there is much better Megane's going for less.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 556 ✭✭✭Carson10

Bad pics OP..Dull and univiting looking. Car is dirty and the alloys look like they have never been cleaned.

From all the 1,000's of car ads i seen on donedeal, when i see someone post up a pic of a dirty car for sale, it tells me that they never cared for it. if they didnt bother to clean it for the advert pictures then they prob never really looked after it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,584 ✭✭✭monkeysnapper

Poor Layla is taking a real battering here . But at least the op can take on board what has been said here, and can see there's a reason the car hasn't had any interest . In this case it's really simple .

No disrespect OP but this seems to be an thing of late I've noticed. Even take here on Adverts as an abstract example. Someone selling an opened iPad for €509 (The price brand new) and not dropping the price because its what they think its worth, and fighting tooth and nail on thread about it. Boggles the mind.

Any price, in any market is dictated by the market not the seller. Unless your in the luxurious position of having something extremely rare or sought after, you should take the average market price, knock off 10% and thats your price. You do not want to be the most expensive in any listing of similar cars you'll instantly lose the sale. The only reason to be more expensive that any other listing is if you have something truly remarkable i.e. Extremely high spec, tax'd for a year, just NCT'd etc. And even then it won't add €1000's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

A quick search tells me there are 30 2005 petrol Megane saloons on Carzone. In that kind of situation the only cars that will sell will be those that stand out to potential buyers. Either the mileage will be very low, the spec will be good, the condition and standard of ad will be top notch, there will be a long warranty offered or the price will be very cheap.

Unfortunately for the OP this Megane ticks none of those boxes, which means it is highly unlikely that it will sell. Anyone who does a search for a 2005 Megane petrol saloon (in itself an unlikely scenario :pac:) will simply skip over the OP's car and look at the more eye-catching examples.

Really OP, I would get car professionally cleaned, inside an out, to gether with New Photos. I would get a new NCT and price it at E 2750. This way you stand a fighting chance. Toe b honst it is not worth E 3500:)

    Not Your Ornery Onager

Definitely get it NCT'd. You can do this from 3 months before the expiry date.

Take the other suggestions regarding prepping the car, getting new good pics and reducing the price on board too.

    Not your ornery onager

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,532 ✭✭✭JohnBoy26

First off take all the garbage out of the ad about side impact protection etc. The one thing a buyer doesn't want is an ad that's hard to read. Put all neccesary info you have about the car in clear bullet points. Eg

*Full Service History(if it has one)

    *NCT MM/YY

    *Tax MM/YY(If valid)

Get the car properly cleaned and bring it to a neutral location and take good pics of all sides of the car and one or two of the interior. You will also be better off getting it nct'd aswel as others have said to increase your chance of selling it.

Tbh your going to have to drop the price aswel. At 3.5k your married to it.

There is only one buyer for a Renault Megane - Satan. He is driving a Citroen at the moment. Megane - nobody wants one, and rightly so.

If the NCt is up in 3 months, you can get a NCT done early.

There's only one reason for selling the car this close to the NCT; you've got it put through the NCT, and it failed. Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole myself.

If it had passed the NCT, we're talking a whole new ball game.

Oh, and car-for-cash gets you the cars weight in case; it doesn't matter how old it is.

I don't think anyone has mentioned that red is not the most desirable of colours.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,042 ✭✭✭Bpmull

Op it's not a bad car. A couple of things about the ad I noticed. Wash and dry the car have it spotless inside and out. it's dirty in the pics. take 10 pictures of it your allowed 10 take 3 of the inside at least. Kind of stoop down when you take the pictures it gives better pictures as you are at the level of the you are just looking down over the car and it looks stupid. I'd but 3 months tax on it for what it would cost. Defiantly nct it you won't sell it without an nct. I'd mention it has side airbags and has a high safety rating we sold ours to a family and that kind of appealed to them. If you do that you are suddenly selling a taxed, NCtd, clean car with fairly low milage that's alot more attractive. Then you will have to drop the price but I'd do all the above first. As I said ours sold in 10 hours and 4 people wanted to buy it but our ad was alot better than yours not trying to offend you. If you don't always buy and sell cars then it is hard to know what to do to sell it. Best of luck with the sale.

It could be vomit beige - if it's priced right, photographed well & NCT'd, there will be interest.

Cars on Done Deal do take a while to shift. Took me three months to sell my 206, and I had it on for a good price! As suggested earlier, I gave it a good clean inside and out, new air freshners, shampooed the seats, took nice pics of it at another location, and I STILL couldn't get it shifted in a hurry!!

Fella couldn't believe the condition of the car. 8 years old, only done 33k miles, FSH, taxed and NCT'd for another year. I gave the buyer all the bills for the car, service log, copies of MoT's (I imported the car), in fact everything I ever bought for the car, I was able to supply the receipts.

Might be an idea to take a pic of the odometer too?

Colour is a matter of personal taste, if the price is right this car will sell. I think red is one of the more popular colours.

Oh the price is 100% the reason, I get that, but although there are many red cars about, they are less desirable than other common colours.

It's the pictures that'll sell the car OP, do your best to take nice ones of the car shining inside and out. NCT is a big one too, proves the car is genuinely roadworthy.

Seems like I'm just repeating previous posts, so best of luck with the sale, nobody likes to hear of someone being strapped for cash :)
