    Has anyone tried couch surfing?
Is it safe for a single girl to both surf and take people in?

I hosted for years - hosted a few hundred people in total. Never had a problem.

Thanks Spurious. Did you hear any bad stories through the years?
    Did you stay many places?

I only ever stayed in one and met up with a few people I'd hosted while in Australia and New Zealand and in Canada. If you stick to people with good feedback and even contact some of their referees if you like, then you'll be fine.

I never had a bad experience but I know from others who did they kind of had a bad feeling about people all along. Nobody I know had any dreadful experiences, but people saying they were coming for two nights and staying two weeks, that sort of thing. I found the VAST majority of my surfers to be lovely people. I never hosted anyone who hadn't been in touch with me from a couiple of weeks in advance. I never hosted last minute people or 'extra' friends.

I reckoned it was my house and I have every right to have certain requirements. If they don't like it, tough.

The forums on the site have all sorts of accounts of bad experiences, though considering the number of hosts and surfers, they are rare, as I said. The registration process where you get approved by proving your address through a credit card is very good.
