Dishwasher consumption - 6l vs 10l

We're looking at replacing the dishwasher at the moment. We are happy enough to put money in up front to save money in the future, so we are looking at devices which consume less electricity & less water.

I've looked at the figures and the electricity savings seem to be marginal at the moment. Based on manufacturers figures (which are no doubt a little optimistic so I have upped them a bit) the difference between efficient and really really efficient is in the order of €10 per year, based on estimated running costs of ~€50 to €60. This is based on taking their annual kWh and then assuming we'll probably be doing 1.5 times what they estimate. We would normally run the machine on the eco setting which is used for these calculations.

Anyhoo . . . we're also due to be charged for water at some point in the future, so cutting down on the water side of things would be a good idea too. Almost all the machines we have seen consume ~10 litres per wash, but I've come across a few full size ones which only use 6 litres. That's 40% less, so it's got to be good.

Does anyone know whether the lower water usage impacts the cleaning function? If some machines can get away with 6l per wash, then why don't they all? How come I haven't come across any 7, 8 or 9 litre machines? Why onlu 6 or 10?

In short - is there a catch to using a full size machine with only 6 litres of water or should I just go for it?

[edit] here's a reasonable stab at an explanation from the man from Bosch - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXVjDP2uguY - they keep the waste water from the final rinse (of mostly clean dishes) and use it for the pre-rinse of the next wash. Makes sense to me, but I would be interested in others experience of this function.
