i was planning on reseeding some ground using the one pass system this spring, has anyone done it this way

i will take the ground for silage so i can leave till April to do,
The fields are covered in rushes and some ragwort but i managed to graze it to the bone last year, I was going to spray round up at the end feb/march, cut it to the bone then and gather all loose off cuts up and then lime it and come along with the one pass and fertilizer

    any advice most welcome

If it was mine , after spraying it i would plough it. Reason being it would bury all the rushes and ragworth.

I ploughed a couple years ago and the ground is in muck after last year, with one pass you get ground back in use quicker

I ploughed and reseeded 2 years ago and the ground is perfect even after last years wet summer.

    1 Burn off
    2 Lime and P&K
3 6-10 days after spray seed
    4 Roll
5 Fert Nitrogen when you have 3 leaves
6 Spray for weeds really hits dock seedlings. Do not leave this too late 3 leaf stage very n.b.
7 5 weeks later start with light frequent grazing weanlings if poss.If you tug plant and it doe not uproot ok to graze

We use an Atchinson stitcher but same as one pass

    Hope this helps

it was partially my own fault as I am heavilly stocked and needed the grass, i let some cows into it and they churned it , its a complete mess now

has any one any tips, would a spring roll (non chinese type) a spray and fertilizer do the trick

if when you burn off there is some rushes in the field would you cut and gather these up first, the contractor who is doing mine reckons that the need to be removed as the clumps will affect the one pass

wonder could you get away with those mulching flail type toppers, would leave hte rushes in dust ? obviously after they were dead

traditionally we reseeded as part of a rotation as my dad used to do a small bit of tillage so we would always plough in the ground after beet, spuds or turnips (depending on what he was growing). we would then under sow corn (barley or oats) with grass seed and make arable silage. the corn would stifle the weeds and when cut would leave the grass behind. The grass would then push on after the corn was cut. recently we have been using less tillage so have actually reseeded grass fields. Had looked at direct sowing with a one pass and was chatting to a neighbour that does this regually. He feels it is a great job but mentioned that the one pass/direct sow wont take out any rutting or humps and hollows, were as good ploughing will level out the field again. We reseeded last in 2011 with the rotovator to break up the top soil and it did a great job, would have been happier if the field hadnt got as much of a rutting last summer but its after repairing its self nicly over the authumn and you wouldnt think it was the same field now after the doing it got in august. looks good and will be used for the 1sr grazing in march.

Do you find that the trash or dead grass effects the new grass growth ? with this system, I would be looking at getting a contractor with an Tine harrow and over seeder to sow it

I would do after silage or extreme grazing so no thrash problem. As regards Rushes thankfully I can't advise.

The advantage of the burn off is it kils off weed grasses an makes tilling easier, till very shallow as it keeps moisture in ground I know you would wonder in Ireland but lack of moisture is the biggest reson for poor strike.

Tine seeder sounds good I have no experience with them as none in this area.

Thanks Delaval, I want to reseed and am going to try this option first, how soon could you spray off and sow grass seeds in the spring ? was thinking the earlier the better to get the best of grass growth coming into the summer

We do alot of one passing each year on bane ground. We either disk it first then one pass it or plant it in straight. Welift the coulters about 2 inches off the ground and have fitted spalding following tines on the back to cover the seed. Works brilliant. If the ground is compacted sub-soil it.

What time of year do you usually do it, after which cut? Trash was certainly a problem for me last year, I resseded 10acres and was going to direct drill but ended up ploughing it fully, couldn't get the cows to graze down enough, and I didn't want to wait any later as it was late Sept before we got it done anyways!

I try to do in May or June. We would sometimes take a cut of bales about 5 days after spraying. You might have to pay baler man by the mile rather than by the bale!
