Thinkinh of buying an old golf diesel that has a straight thru exhaust, will there be problems with the Nct on noise and modification? I dont think the exhaust runs the whole length of the car

If the car is meant to have a cat and doesnt then it doesnt stand a hope in hell of passing on emissions.

According to Sect 54 of the NCT Manual a missing or non-functioning silencer is a fail, so your straight-through should be marked as a fail. Even with a silencer the noise level has to be below 99dB(A). And if any fumes enter the cabin that's another fail.

Emissions? On a diesel? I would be very doubtful of an 80's diesel having a cat to begin with anyway.

I'm pretty sure the "missing silencer" means that your silencer has actually fallen off, and not been replaced with a straight pipe. Once it doesn't deafen the tester I'd imagine you'll be OK, given the age of the car. If it's the turbo diesel then there's a good chance it would still be less than 99dB, since the turbo acts as a silencer.

    Thanks mate.

Cat does little to nothing for diesel emissions :)

You can decat a turbo diesel and put a straight through pipe and it will make no difference to emissions testing, know of several Td5 Defenders like it. Diesels are only tested on smoke opacity.

Noise is a different matter, the turbo is a pretty effective silencer but you'll hear it whistling from a long way off!

I took out the cat of my 1.6hdi Berlingo and replaced with stainless pipe.

Seems nippyer. But when you come off the throttle you can hear the turbo slow down fast. Normal?

    Still has backbox
