Was very useful thread when I was updating the tyres on the pickup L200... so as its now time to update the wife's car hopefully I can get similar useful info. I appreciate any info.

We live out in the countryside near the bogs in Kildare (5 miles from Edenderry), and our local roads get icy, snow, river water etc... so I want tyres that are good in winter/poor roads, as the kids are driven to school each day on them..

Michelen seem to have a good rep.. are they good over winter on country roads etc? or are they other brands that are definately good?

    Thanks.

I've got some Bridgestone A001 WeatherControl, I find them very good on wet roads, frosty roads recently, and they have better grip than the Michelin Energy that were previously on the car, which would easily give some wheel-spin when moving off quickly from a damp junction or roundabout.

I don't think they are going to last as long as the Michelin Energy, nor would they have as low a rolling resistance, but I think the extra grip has proved worth it on a few occasions. I haven't had snow or ice to test them on so can't comment on that, but they are winter biased rather than winter tyres so would not expect them to be anywhere near as good as a dedicated winter tyre, but then nor would they have the drawback in terms of tread-wear. Michelin have a wide range of tyres, and I have found them good also.

Hangooks are great on the average car being driven under normal conditions.

    Good grip and wear

Second vote for hankook, I picked up these all seasons recently and am getting two more they are very quiet, check out the reviews. Posted these in the winter tire thread also. Bargain at 80euros a pop for an XL.

I have Bridgestone turanzas on my astra and I find them to be a good budget tyre. I previously had hankook optima and found them to be good but they didn't give the same amount of grip.

Bridgestones have a very soft sidewall though not good for rural roads had them myself before, and the hankooks are XL's and all season cant go wrong.

Hardly a budget brand. I priced them last week at €95 fitted and balanced compared to €80 for Hangooks

They grip well but wear VERY quickly because of it

We live way out in the country in the middle of no where and fairly bad roads and I've had no hassle with the bridgestones and my dad has them as well. And are cars don't spend much time in towns it's mainly bad roads. But at the same time I'm tyre expert all I know is I find the bridgestones give better grip in the wet than the hankook but at the same time the hankook is a great tyre I have had them on plenty of cars and jeeps.

Tyre land cuaffsgrange Kilkenny I don't know where your from but that would be the buisiest tyre places in Kilkenny and its a good but out from Kilkenny. To get them for 80 you will have to bargain abit they will say 90 a tyre but if you say 160 for 2 tyres they shouldn't turn you away they work on turnover not high profit per tyre. Google the website it really depends where you live I suppose.

Many thanks for the info folks.. I'll do some read-up on the tires mentioned, and check out with our local dealers which ones are available etc. today.

    Many thanks :)

I wouldn't bother with any of the sellers in Edenderry, they only sell muck. The fellow in the old railway station tried to sell me "king" tyres when I asked for a decent brand (and not the cheapest) and swore blind that they were the brand he uses and they were great. Yea right.

There is a fellow in Enfield (in the Enterprise Center) that is a hankook reseller and they're very reasonably priced. He also sells decent partworns from Germany (Dunlop, Michelin, Verdstein etc). I'd have a look there.

In terms of Hankook, you need to be careful. I got a set on a previous car - when I googled them after i brought them, turns out they were "summer tyres" as opposed to all weather. They really didn't perform very well for me over the winter months.

OP, before buying check the reference code of the tyre you're thinking of buying first, just to make sure.

(Hankooks may well be good but the version I had wasn't )

Most tyres that are sold here are summmer tyres.

My vote goes for Uniroyal Rain Expert. Unbelievable grip on wet and even in snow. However, it's a noisy tyre with short life.
