Im in 3rd yr in health faculty, and am considering commuting on the train from cavan - nearest station is edgeworthstown or mullingar and takes 1hr 30- 1hr-50 mins. Found a place in lucan for 270e with only esb to pay as bills, bus and food bring it up a bit but am unsure what to do.

Sounds good to stay at home, only prob is getting work done, with little brother and sister and gamsat in march ontop. Ive got a fair bit on for the last semester with studying.

    Any advice

Commuting from Cavan seems like madness.

My advice: don't, unless you can't afford to live in Dublin.

I commute from Wicklow Town (around 15 hours a week, I was able to get a lift for about 70% of the last year, but bus fare is close to 50 euro/week).

It eats into your study time/spare time, and you end up feeling wrecked at the weekends due to getting up early all week. Being governed by "last buses/trains" is annoying, especially if you have late lectures or meetings.

Also with living at home, your family seem to get louder when you're trying to study. With your GAMSAT coming up, that would make living in Dublin a priority. Getting into the library when you're commuting is a pain, and expensive if you don't have spare journeys on your ticket.

Ye it was nuts in first year, and it was a struggle to get stuff done. Theres friends my parents have in lucan that i stayed with last yr for 100e a week but got abuse from - verbal. Now the 'problems' they had are gone and are back looking for me to stay. Just down the road's a place for 270 a month with a female, only prob there is i dont know the person and you never know what hassle ur going to get .

Time to grow up and learn to deal with these issues, I reckon. Commuting from Cavan is ludicrous.

factor in your commuting cost as well (~80 for monthly bus ticket) and the odd taxi too.

Have a look on daft and try get a cheap room somewhere in the city or within walking / cycling distance of the college. You can meet your potential flatmates beforehand so remember it's an interview for them as much as it is for you. Alternatively there's 1 room bedsits going for 350 -400 pm

works out cheaper when you add travel and don't forget your time is valuable too!

A few years ago I was doing a course in Dublin and commuted for the week from Longford station - about 10mins down the line from Edgesworthtown - to the city. That week nearly killed me. I had planned on doing the coursework in the evenings coming home on the train but by the second day I was too tired to concentrate. Come the end of the week I was absolutely wrecked!
That train journey, plus the drive from Cavan to and from the station in the first place - I'd say no way! I'd advise you ask around your classmates or search though online ads for housemates. Yes, there's the possibility you may get someone horrible - but on the other hand you may meet your new best friend either!
