Bishops under attack over rape case abortion stance

CATHOLIC bishops have come under fire from TDs for their staunch opposition to allowing abortion for pregnant rape victims.

    http://www.independent.ie/national-news/bishops-under-attack-over-rape-case-abortion-stance-3348936.html

Labour's Ivana Bacik accused the Catholic Church of being motivated by a hatred of women in their opposition to abortion. Senator Ivana Bacik accused the Catholic bishops of opposing the legislation due to their underlying belief in the "innate deceitfulness of women" and "misogyny".

Fine Gael Meath East TD Regina Doherty said she was at a loss why the Catholic Church was putting "both lives at risk" by giving no option when a rape victim was suicidal.

Bishop of Elphin Reverend Christopher Jones, was also criticised for using "offensive" and "disturbing" language and said "We claim that we must protect the innocent, voiceless and powerless unborn child in the womb. The solution of taking that life is no solution," he said. Bishop Jones insisted that the Catholic Church was opposed to the deliberate killing of an unborn baby – and not life-saving treatment for a mother.

This is rich considering the churches attitudes to kids over the last 70 years, here is the headline in today's times

The Holy See has not given up on Ireland. Despite two tempestuous decades of clerical sex abuse scandals, marked by the Irish Catholic Church’s unprecedented loss of credibility and moral authority, there are those in the Vatican who would still like to believe that Ireland can resume its once “proud” role of last bastion of traditional, conservative Catholicism in an increasingly atheist western Europe.

Finally a thread on the church. AH has been missing this. I look forward to a lively and good spirited debate.

Of course the church is against abortion, that has always been their stance. Why is she getting mad at the bishops? Why doesn't she get mad at the pope, he's the man with the power?

I can only assume that the OP has an obsession with bashing the bishop.

She's popular with whoever gets to vote for Trinity in the Seanad?

Shes an intelligent and accomplished person, but would seem to have a bit of a Dr Shipman style bedside manner.

What we saw yesterday was two sincerely held views clashing (that of Ivana Bacik and the RCC representatives). Unfortunetly, Bacik resorted to name calling in an attempt to undermine the RCC view. Pity.

Pleased that the Chair corrected her very silly factual error when she said that the church was made up exclusively male celebate people.

I understand that she's not allowed within 100 yards of a dairy section in any outlet as the shop owners were getting pissed off with everything going sour:(

....that seems to be the case. I've never heard a good word, and I'm from the same side of the political fence as she is. Never met her meself though, I should admit.
