was walking past a garage earlier today with no intention of viewing and saw a nice silver 2004 alfa romeo 166, 2.0 twinspark

garage said it had only 52,000kms on the clock, full service history, 1 owner and brand new NCT on it

car was looks in v good condition both inside and outside, new tyres

As I wasnt intending to view any cars, I never went for a test drive etc

Looks very tempting but the price was very very high -I know it has very low mileage, FSH and brand new nct , good condition but the price is €4,950

Is this reasonable or just madness? granted im sure you could haggle , just wondering peoples thoughts and also if somone was serious on this car what to look out for

    thanks

    €5000 is a bit of a ripoff for a 9 year old Alfa. And 52000km? Heehaw! Here's a 2004 for €1750 and here's one for €2850

Take a good 2k off that price and you might be somewhere on the right lines..

I do love them but that is way too much.

Yes agree totally. I googled alfas on done deal and they were around 2500 ish and cheaper, if I were serious Id offer 3 but nothing more I dont think. Cant see that car shifting at the asking price. Aside from that very nice car there

Look for sump damage as they can bang down on road bumps and ramps.
Check that clutch is nice a light and that all gears are easily selected when both hot and cold.
Check that engine isnt smoking or knocking. Also listen to see if it sounds a bit like a diesrl for a few seconds on start up.
Check all electric functions and check that ics system is working. This is the radio/screen unit that has all the phone and air con functions built in.
Take for a good drive, check for any suspension noises and or wheel bearing noises.
Check that it idles evenly and when driving check it revs cleanly right through the rev range in all gears without flat spots.

I ran a 99 reg 166 when it was relatively new and it was very expensive to keep on the road. At that time, parts were expensive but now there are alot available given the numbers of cars being broken.
Mine was a 40 k mile full history car 2.5 years old but it still needed alot of expensive repairs on a regular basis.

    Facelift?
    Full service history?
    Variator?
Leather? (yes, miserable people bought these cars without leather )
    ICS code?
    Wheel bearings?
    Radiator replaced?
    Leaking cabin?
    Suspension woes?

Ask the seller these if you are interested in buying. That car is at least 2.5k too expensive. I wouldn't bother with a T Spark anyway (I wonder why :pac:)

thanks for the replies. to be honest it was only as as I was walking past and saw it parked on the pavement and then when I heard about the history I thought it sounded good. Price sounded very high and lost all interest.

I think I am/ was a classic case of a time waster because even if was priced cheaper I probably still wouldnt be buying anyway

They're not a car for the faint hearted, require a lot of attention, care and money to run properly and give you the full driving experience. Also, in those cars, V6 only for maximum smiles per gallon. My 2.5 does 21mpg combined :(

I had a 2.0. I got 29 mpg on the trip computer over thousands of miles.

I had 2003 two liter Twin Spark. I loved the car when I had it and still wouldn't mind another one but I hated that two liter engine so only V6 if I'll ever buy another one. 2liter one was too slow and too thirsty (for two liter). Because of variator problems it sounded like a diesel when cold.
I suppose the 2004 model is after the facelift, did that not come with a different set of engines?

3.2 GTA engine was an addition to the engine line up with the facelift iirc

and no changes in diesel versions? I thought all the engines were reworked and 3.2 liter version added.

I know my one is a euro 2, 2001 - 2004 was euro 3 and the facelift was euro 4. There was a 2.0 turbo for certain markets, I think it was dropped fairly quick. Diesel was the 2.4 5 pot only and the 3.2 was added to the range with the facelift.

On a phone, open to corrections :)

Yeah, I think the diesel one was taken from Lancia Kappa.

10v I think. The Kappa I had was petrol and 20v 5-cylinder. Nice sound.

Used to go past there every day a few years ago. The appearance of the place at that time didnt wasn't good. Lots of ropey looking stock that appeared to be there along time.
    Maybe different now.

Correct, 3.2 was added to the facelift model in 2004. AFAIK the 2.0 engine wasn't changed at all from the pre-facelift model and is exactly the same engine. 3.0V6 was also available in the facelift too, although many seem to be automatics.

The 2.4JTD was available in LHD only.

You're a blinkered fool if you walk past a nice shiny Alfa for sale and don't start daydreaming bobin fudge!!! Anyway... you have started thinking now, the seed is planted in your brain... You'll probably buy one soon!!

I took a look at this car thinking if it was a genuine absolute low mileage minter I'd be prepared to pay a little over the odds.

Having seen it I'd be suspicious of that mileage.

driver seat looks a well worn, doors have been poorly touched up on closer inspection as well

Wouldnt be too pleased though if I were somone serious about buying it with people literally scraping past it on the pavement where it is parked and traffic flying past it on the other
