Well technically the paper has value. It could be burned to heat the house. If I could buy a ton of euros off someone for €0 then I'd be in profit.

All fiat currencies are intrinsically worthless.

Hey 2011 called, it wants its jokes back.

Don't understand why the €5 note is the first one out with the new security features - if I was counterfeiting money, wouldn't be the first note I'd be doing!

The €5 note is the most counterfeited note on the black market. Have you ever seen a €5 note been scanned in a shop or a pub?

I have actually, quite a number of times, but then again, I'd say it would be rare enough overall - it will be interesting to see what the rest of the notes will look like.

In that case I'd like to offer you the trade of a lifetime. the entire contents of all your lworthless FIAT currency bank accounts In exchange for the contents of this mystery box!

I know in the US anyway that the $20 bill is the most counterfeited ($100 is the most counterfeited outside the US). I'd be surprised if the €5 one is here, it just doesn't have enough value to justify the chances of being caught. I've never seen a €10 scanned either fwiw.

That's the point. Nobody expects 5s to be counterfeited, so they don't check them for counterfeits.

Seems the €20 and €50 are by far the most counterfeited (77%): http://www.ecb.int/press/pr/date/2012/html/pr120716.en.html

Only .5% of counterfeits are €5 notes.

I'm not surprised to be honest - which is why I questioned about €5 notes being the first with the new security features

I have a 5euro coin from the Netherlands. I'm pretty sure it's not legal tender in Ireland though. It's a commemorative coin but still legal tender over there.

Still legal tender once it's an official euro coin.
Good luck finding someone who believes you though as few people are used to seeing coins above the standard 2 euro ones. We even have a 100 euro gold coin issued in 2008 btw

Is is just a new €5 note out this year or will there also be new €10s, €20, €50s and so on?

I have never seen a €200 or a €500 note for real. I must be poor.:(

You don't normally see €200 and €500 notes in the wild, they're heavily associated with organised crime, due to their large value and relative lightweightedness.

I've only ever see one once, back in the bubble days a big property developer tried to use one to buy a round of drinks.

Sounds like they are rolling them out alright with the new security features. I've seen a €200 alright, but not a €500. Lot of places won't accept anything higher than 100

Bet you won't be able to get it at an ATM just like a €10

Well, that's a vote of confidence for Greece then, it's still on the notes :D

Very few atms stock €10 notes anymore, only ones I know of are on college grounds.

ATMs in Austria issue €100 notes, but I've never seen them issued by ATMs anywhere else.

I've seen far more €500 notes than €200, the €200 note seems to be quite rare.
