How did you manage to find that one out? I'm going to the 'official' launch of the guide next week. Great to see Ballinrobe being acknowledged though (Westport won it last year). You know any more of the winners?

Is it that Ballinrobe has improved in some way or that Westport has let maintenance standards drop ?

i think that the standard of courses in general has fallen if we are totally honest with ourselfs. This is probably due to all the cut backs in staff and budgets. Ballinrobe though is consistantly good from what i hear and from my experiences there. Has some great holes there. Par 3's as a package are as good as any. Nothing spectacular but par is a good score on each of them.

Nothing more than the place deserves. I played Westport and ballinrobe last summer around the same time and to my mind there was no comparison. I'm not taking a dig at Westport but Ballinrobe was just so far ahead in presentation/condition etc that it left it no contest.
I actually had an opportunity of talking to the head greens keeper down there in the last days before Christmas and told him as much but he was far too modest. I glad his hard work has been acknowledged he's a really sound fella.

    Well done Ballinrobe.
Used to play it and other courses in the area a few years back in a society and it always stood out as being a great course

Yeah, I really do enjoy playing Ballinrobe except for the 400 mtr, par 4, uphill, out of bounds 17 Hole. Wrecks my card everytime:(

I remember reading some time back on a thread here that he had come from Druids Glen and was knocking the place into great shape. Seems to be the position with the high award now being received. Has open singles on Fridays for 20 Yo-Yos if my recollection is correct. Nice friendly clubhouse and good food. Was a good challenge with plenty of variety and very enjoyable.

( Note to self ) Must make a trip there in the spring and check it out.

+1, also played Portumna and Ballinrobe in the same wet week in Aug and Ballinrobe was in far superior condition. It's a great club with great practice facilities to match and in my opinion had always been the best parkland in Connaught

The one criticism I would have of the club is the tree protecting the par 5 18th green, too near the green to go over or shape around with a long 2nd shot

Has Wesport a problem, or are you expressing surprise that Westport won last year ?

Should see it now its no problem at all, no leaves. Point yer hybrid straight at it and now you can see the ball squirt off away to 3 feet :-)

High Summer Westport is a very scenic course.Rains and its a bog.
All year payability should be a factor in judging a course.Ballinrobe
is fully deserving of its award.

I'm glad to see from the responses that I'm not alone. I just hate that 17th hole. Just as the tiredness and hunger are coming to the fore you reach this hole. Uphill. Out of bounds catches any decent slice. Pull it and you're also gone. Even after a good drive it looks as it you have a mile to go. And then that f..... tree on the 18th. I hate it too. I would love to see it gone and maybe a water hazzard or dyke short to really make it a really good risk/reward hole. I've only beaten 36 points once on this track and almost every time its 17 that contributes to my downfall.
