Hi all, just wondering if anyone kbows if 17 amp wiring is ok to put in an aeg. The iriginal gearboz us a vfc although the rear wires werent long enough so off to the butcher it was. Anyway I have a 20 amp fuse amp fuse and I wondering if 17 amp wiring will work with the 20 amp fuse along with original vfc wiring which is around 16awg I think I presume they will work together but I just want to be sure. Thanks

Just buy some silver plated, low resistance aeg wiring.

Think of it this way, if you have a fault generating 20+ amps and your wiring is rated for 17amp, it will fry it, quite simply. Your fuse should always be a lower current rating than the current carrying capacity of a cable, one function of a fuse is to protect the cable. Like I said aeg wiring all the way, it has a high current rating.

My fuse says: F25A250V so I guess its axtually 25amps but this wiring is ment to take a really high voltage

You see 17 amps sounds like a lot, an it is a lot, only take milliamps to kill a person but that is beside the point :), but under a fault condition like a short circuit I can tell you it generates massive current alot more than 17amps.

Current and voltage are two completely different kettles of fish. A fuse protects against fault "currents" so in turn protects the cable amongst other parts.

The cable might be able to take 400 and your only using 7.4v (for arguments sake) but it is really the current carrying capacity of the cable that is the most important. A fault situation like a short circuit in AC or DC like I said generates a massive amount of current, when the fault current current exceeds the rating of the fuse, the fuse blows and saves the cable from damage.

In that case could I get a 16 amp fuse and if ao are there any disasvantagea that come with it

Correct me if im wrong but wouldnt a 25amp fuse protect any wiring which has a lower rating than it and qould a 16 amp fuse give me lower eof etc or would it even have any disadvantages

It would protect any wiring that has a current carrying capacity above 25amp, if your cable can only can handle 17 amps any fault current greater than this will melt your insulation and go pooooof!

I understand how it can be confusing the fuse will blow regardless, but the damage will be done to your cable before your fuse has a chance to blow.

A 16 amp fuse will protect 17 amp rated cable yes but I would not recommend it. I can go into a lot lot more detail on this but I'll probably confuse myself and you :D.
