    Hi,

My son has to ask people how religion was in Ireland before 1970. Now, if some of you are not too bothered letting your age show, would you mind answering a few of these general questions if applicable, please? ;)

1.) How often did you go to church/attend mass?
2.) Did you have religious symbols in your house?
3.) Did you fast before communion?
4.) Did you have your own personal bible or was there a bible for the whole family?

    And thats it!
    Thanks...

Just a point in regards to the research. You're a likely to encounter some selection bias by posting this solely in the 'Christianity' forum. Perhaps also post it in 'Atheism & Agnostic' forum to get a more true reflection of religion pre-1970.

Born in the late 1950s -- and from the Protestant (Church of Ireland) community

    1. Church every week
    2. no
    3. no - not a requirement for us
    4. bibles all over the place
    • a family bible that was only taken down ceremoniously when someone died and their name and details would be entered - a big leather bound King James version
    • individual bibles usually presented to us as a confirmation present
    • bibles with commentaries and different translations of the bible
    • illustrated childrens bibles
    • bibles we brought to Sunday school -- some were paperbacks that would take a bit of wear and tear etc

    1. Mass every week.

    2. There were a couple of religious pictures, but for aesthetic rather than devotional reasons - e.g. a Madonna and Child print done by a friend of my mother's (who was an artist).

    3. Yes.

    4. There was a family bible and several other bibles, but as far as I recall none of the bibles belonged to any family member in particular. There were also several books of bible stories aimed at kids.

    1. Mass on Sundays and holy days, two masses at Christmas.
    2. Yes, lots of them; rosary beads, May altars, Secured Heart lamps, pictures, statues and knick nacks from Lourdes, Knock etc.
3 No and didn't know anyone who did other than a collection of bible stories for children.

Seems weird now looking back on it.

Born 1943. 1950s , mass every Sunday and holy day. Communion once a month, fasting from midnight. Evening devotions every evening in May and October. Sodality once a month on a Sunday afternoon.Confession once a month. No option with going. Strictly enforced at home and by Christian Brothers in school. Religion was all pervasive. Turned me off it forever.
