Getting a Russian Visa

Sorry to reopen this but I have a question about the Russian Visa:

I'm an Irish citizen, and hold an Irish passport but currently live in Melbourne. I want to go to Moscow in August to watch the World Athletics Championships and do a bit of travel within the Moscow area aswell.

    1) Can I apply for a Russian visa in Australia, or do I have to do it through my home country (something which will be 100% impossible for me to do)

    2) Will there be any allowances and easing of entry for those travelling to watch the World Athletics Championships, like there was for the Champions League Final? It is the 3rd largest sporting event in the world after all.

I faced a similar situation while living in Finland. The problem is its through the Russian embassy you need to get the visa. I tried the one in Finland but couldn't do it there, ended up having to let my passport home to the embassy in Dublin (I had a few people coming over and back at the time for courier services ;-) ).
If you have been resident there for a while then try the most local Russian embassy, they might be able to process it if you have proof of residence. I think thats what I was told in Finland, but I was only there for 4 months without getting bills etc in my name.

as far as I know you always apply for a visa at the local embassy of where you are resident, irrespective of citizenship.
You may be required to prove that you have the right to be a resident and such, but if you are then that shouldn't be an issue.
They're very picky with their paperwork so be very exact in how you fill out their forms. I had a few problems as I had to explain myself for filling out the form "incorrectly" (I misunderstood some of the questions). In Ireland it's usually a matter, of no worries, we'll fix that, and it's just crossed out on the same page. In the Russian side, it's go and fill it out again or I can't be bothered to listen to you. It's fair enough I guess, but just be aware of it...

You can apply locally, it's all done centrally now regardless, and they post back. With the exception of individual travellers having to get a letter from the hotel in Russia (they are well used to it), is was painless and prompt. Half think their consulate is in Sydney. Pity. Hot babes. Just sayin. Getting locked in on the train thou, with the boarding armed guards checkin your passport and giving 'that look' like you're a double-agent, was pretty cool. Fabulous country to visit. Only 'mistake' made was staying in a suburban location, few (if anyone) spoke English (not a complaint) so found it exceptionally challenging to get places. Will be very well organised thou, so a non-issue for you, but of note at other times.

Got an email back off Russian Athletics telling me not to worry about it and that they would assist with the visa process. As far as I'm aware an invite from Russian Athletics will suffice as my "invitation" as long as I am travelling specifically for the Championships. No need for hotel or agency invites.
