I was walking in the fields and the dogs rose some birds, I wasnt fast enough to get a photo, but I think they were about blackbird size with a curved beak visibly but not too long. Think the chest was mottled like a thrush, pale creamy brown.
Had a look in somebooks but can't see anything similar.

It looked as if they were laying in the grass, rather than standing because I didn't see them until they rose.

Common Snipe perhaps? The tend flush very suddenly when you are only a few feet away.

The Jack Snipe is very similar, a little smaller in size and has a shorter bill than the Common Snipe..

I guess it could have been either of those two, I'll keep a closer look out next time. Thanks

Meadow pipit? When flushed gives a "zweet zweet zweet" call.

    Snipe
    What dog have you got

When flushed a common snipe will fly up and call loudly "catch" and fly off in a zig-zag fashion. A Jack snipe will usually not call and will fly straight up (no zigzag) and land generally only around 10 metres away.

I've a Border/Rough Collie cross and a Jack Russell / Daschund Cross, they both love to work a field.

I don't think the birds made a noise when they rose, and they flew into the next field, don't remember them zig-zagging.

Did it have a curved bill, or just a long bill?

    Curlew possibly
Same colour as a snipe and bigger but you said blackbird size which makes me think otherwise
My old GSP raised one or two before in Galway when I was out shooting years ago
