40k is peanuts when it comes to government spending. Hysterical rubbish designed to find a target to blame.

    It's a disgrace Joe!!

Most of the money probably goes to the "expenses" of the committee set up to find out which footballs are the best for prisoners to use.
I'm sure Bertie is probably the chairman of it.

sure its worth it, did you not see Mean Machine?

Sounds like the authorities should bring in the rule that we had as youngsters. No playing the ball over head height. Would not cut out losses entirely but would surely save a load of balls!

Apparently they were bought at e2 a pop, so much be the classic bright orange cup champion balls. Which equates to roughly 16 balls a DAY! Yeah fubbin right, who's pocketing the cash this time???? GRRRRR!

Is there some way of pursuing a group civil action against AH for causing passive imbecility?

It sounds to me like the prisoners are kicking the balls over the prison walls and then saying "I'll go after it!"... Chancers! :pac:

They're filling the balls with DRUGS and then KICKING them over the wall, where they're then picked up by people in TRACKSUITS who sell the drugs on YOUR streets to CHILDREN as young as TWO!!

You've got to be messi :D

Why can't they buy them out of the prisoners daily allowance they receive? They might take better care of them

Might be a valid argument if there were ten of us chipping in, but when we're in the millions...

I'm not saying this is waste (could well be, hope they're not using them for wall-ball  ) but dismissing E40k like that is foolish.

    Why is it foolish?

And surely the more people chipping in, the more valid my jape, as it costs each tax payer less, no?

Ah now, come on, you have the drugs going in the wrong direction!

Yeah and the more of these costs that accumulate because ah sure it's just a few grand. Looking after the pennies isn't such a bad idea when the country is broke and life and death cuts in the budget are commonplace.

I had the unfortunate experience of visiting someone in hospital last weekend, 6 hours just to be seen in A&E at the time (that was daytime). If this E40k could secure just one extra triage nurse, junior doctor to help just one A&E somewhere in the country then I'd be first to tell the prisoners to make do with a fantasy football league. Of course it's not that simple but you get my drift.

There's a bout 4,000 prisoners at any given time. If the balls are a tenner each, that works out at one ball per year. If that keeps prisoners relaxed, and more well behaved then it's not a bad deal at all.

Prisoners should get a football each, of the finest cast iron, shackled to their leg.

Here's the thing though: I don't really know if €40,000 is a lot to be spending on footballs for prisons, once one factors in the number of prisoners and the number of balls needed. I agree that keeping a critical eye on all public expenditure is no harm, but I also think it's silly to get outraged over relatively small expenses. Even if cuts could be made in the amount spent on footballs for prisons, it's not going to have the same impact as much bigger cuts.

I work in mountjoy a while back(building work) and one of the prison guards was telling me,the moment the bell goes for the prisoners to go back to ther cells, they all kick the balls towards the razor wire on top of the walls.
It also cost money to bring people in to take the balls down from the wire ever year,if its true i dont know.

I for one would rather our violent and nonviolent offenders were kept in 6-foot long cages 24 hours a day, and beaten regularly with bamboo canes. Hopefully then they'll have learned their lesson and will be model citizens upon release.

They buy cheap balls in case the prisoners get hurt, it says.

Not something I've ever seen happening, although you will always have a few dickheads who might do it.

....and we buy them a new ball.

If I got up that that kind of nonsense I'd have been told, 'son if you can't take care of the thing you get, then don't expect me to replace them for you.' Which is pretty much how I learned the value of things and how to respect what I was given.
If you wouldn't tollerate this behaviour it from a 5yr old then it shouldn't be tollerated from an adult.
If you stopped indulging this kind of bad behaviour and refused to replace what people willfully destroyed then my guess is that every ball in the prision would be treated like a treasure, and anybody kicking one at the razor wire would risk becoming the next football....

    Bargain.

Better than spending nothing and the lags perfecting the time honoured game of "dodge the shank".

we used to play with a worn out tennis ball or a crushed coke can in school, that'd be good enough for them
