Ford Galaxy Problems.

A friend of mine has a Ford Galaxy Diesel. I think it's a 2001. Anyway about 2 months ago the car just died, it was towed to an independent garage for repair. The garage diagnosed that the alternator was at fault (second time in 2 years) and replaced it at a cost of 350 euro. It drove fine for about 2 weeks then died again. Again it was taken to the same garage and "A relay" was replaced. Again all was fine for a further 3 weeks later the car died again.

Before it died this time it had been driving fine. Car was driven to an address but just before she arrived the seat belt, hand brake and ABS lights ignited. Car was turned off and then the stereo came on. On re-entering the car and starting the dash lit up, there was a click, an attempt to turn over but didn't start. With jump leads the car starts ok and drove about 1 mile before dying again with a battery warning light but no headlights or indicators. Battery was replaced about 1 year ago with a Bosch replacement so fairly sure it's ok. Battery was tested under load and was good.

Can anyone give some idea what's going on.

    Thanks.

    Ken

Some thoughts (these are in general not specifc to a Ford)

    1. Was the alternator replaced/repaired? (this includes the voltage regulator)
    2. The battery I assume is ok - was it retested?
    3. Is there an intermittent grounding fault?
    4. Any electrical testing done on the voltage on the electrics now?
    5. Any 3rd party equipment (e.g. Mobile kits, etc) installed?

TBH, from the last description of the problem, it does sound like an alternator? But could the fan/aux/drive belt be slipping and preventing full charge?

    1. The garage claim to have replaced the alternator, at least they charged for a new one and said new on the invoice.
    2. The battery was tested when the alternator was replaced and was good, 1 year old Bosch Battery.
    3. I've really no idea, the car is in Sligo.
    4. Again I'm not sure, but some testing was done to diagnose the alternator. When the relay was replaced I presume they had to do a bit more digging.
    5. Just an after-market stereo, but it's been there for more than 5 years without issue and works fine. No car kits or other equipment installed.

Would it be reasonable to expect the garage to repair the car now for free considering they have charged almost 500 euro and have not repaired it.

    Thanks
