They sell those sour eyeballz. That's what I go out to him for anyway. And the occasional Wham or Desperate Dan bar.

I like having ice cream in winter. Doesn't melt as fast :P

I would imagine they find other jobs to keep them going in winter.
The fact that you have seen them is something I find quite strange.

A lot of Ice cream men don't work during the winter. They tend not to need too because it's actually relatively lucrative providing there's a decent bit of weather throughout the year.

The profit margins they make off Ice cream is astronomical.

Our ice cream van comes around at about 7pm. Yes it does be dark and in these modern times no kids do be out playing so its ridiculous that the ice cream van still comes around.

Back in the day(80s), kids were out playing on the street in the dark at 7pm to catch that ice cream. Guess its a combination of media induced fear of child kidnapping and too many playstations that modern day kids don't be out at 7pm for when the ice cream van arrives.

I thought that too at first :P Like if someone wants ice cream they want it. But they only go around when the kids arent in school. - (Any time of the day in summer but only in the evenings in the winter.)

There are quite a few of those drug trucks around Finglas, though there are normal ones too.

One of the days last year, actually, one of them, let's say Mr. Softee, beat the **** out of another ice-cream truck driver for working his turf. Assumed they were drug trucks; nah, turned out they were just selling ice-cream!

It actually could be drugs a lot of the time. Was at an 18th about two years ago and we were at this pub in this area that is noted for drugs...few high scale raids and such in the past. Anyway after the pub closed we were just messing around outside and stuff when we see an ice cream van pass, and a few of the girls, innocent little things they were thought they might be selling vegetables or something (regardless of it clearly being an ice cream van) so signaled them to stop... A lad opens the window thing and displays weed and some tablets... The girls got a bit of a fright and a few of us went over to make sure they were alright... I know we should have probably prevented them going over in the first place but you know how it is... Anyway we told the lads we were grand and said good luck and they were off with no hassle or a bit. So yeah drugs...

Mr Softee still doing the rounds in Finglas? I remember him from the 90s!

I fúcking hate them. If I hear one person say 'oh they're only trying to make a living' I think I may have a falling down moment.

As if going around at stupid o'clock at night isn't bad enough, they target all the nearby schools in the area near me. Children are being taught at schools to try different fruit and veg, yet the ice-cream vans park up outside all the schools for the kids waiting for them to come out.

These eating healthy programmes were introduced in schools to combat the growing obesity problems in children. What chance have the got in changing their attitudes about eating healthy if temptation is waiting outside their school or their house.

Just think, chasing an ice cream van is probably the nearest thing to exercise some of those fat little ****ers get!

They get paid per play by the "ding dong song" man.

Lighten up Abi, it's ice cream not burgers and chips or indeed weed.

Actually the notion of selling drugs from an ice cream van is pretty stupid. All it would take is one phone call to the police and it's pretty hard to hide an ice cream van or get away.

As it happens, I knew a former ice cream van driver and he told me that he sold just as much in winter as in summer. He made plenty of money all year round. In the end he only gave it up because of the hours.

A cousin of mine was an ice cream seller on Howth head for many years. Brought up his kids on it, not the ice cream but the proceeds. Some of you might actually remember him.

I used to love when the van came round our way. Mr Whippy and Mr Softee. Never really liked ice cream that much. But loved the idea of buying out of the van.

Neighbour of mine had an ice-cream van for a few years, sold it in the end because the insurance was massive. I cant remember how much he was paying, but it was something like €4k, its so high because kids are always running around those vans.

When me and a mate were forming our first company, we decided to choose an "off the shelf name" as we were not too bothered what it was. It came back as "Mr Whippees soft Ice creams". Oh how we laughed, especially as we were builders. We expected somthing like Deepbank Ltd...we didn't laugh much, tbh..MWSIC didn't really have the ring we wanted..

The ice cream vans aren't making the kids fat. It's the parents fault most of the time. They allow the kids to eat crap all day everyday and don't encourage them to get enough exercise.
When I was younger, we all ran to get ice creams from the van when he came around, but we were also out playing in the street and parks all day getting loads of exercise. And then we were fed proper dinners when we got home. And we were all fit as a fiddle.
You can't blame an ice cream van for fat kids. If they sit in front of the TV all day and can't keep their chubby little mitts off the junk food and McDonalds, then the parents and todays society is to blame, not some bloke out earning an honest days pay.

Thats nothing! During the ice cream wars in Glasgow, the family of a van owner were burnt to death in an arson attack on their flat by a rival.Makes you wonder how lucrative it is! Indeed Duncan Bannatyne of "dragons den" fame started out his business empire in the ice cream van business before branching into care homes and health clubs etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,395 ✭✭✭✭mikemac1

    Yep, that's true ^^^^

Duncan Bannatyne started in the ice cream business and there does be massive rows between rivals and where they operate

His book is a cracking read

Thats right. Heard about that. Certainly must be a money earner.

I reckon there has to be some mad turf war with ice cream vans :pac: I know on the surface that sounds silly but when good money is involed the dirt comes out in people.

Sure to quote a story... ALDI was looking to open up a store in Blanchardstown last year. But Tesco applied to the council to stop the process (as tesco has a store a few hundred meters from the proposed site)

i was walking into work this morning, and fair enough it was cold enough, n i was eating a loop the loop ice pop:o got a few strange looks:rolleyes::rolleyes: and one of the lad said only you would do that....
so what no-one eats ice-cream during the winter months:), i think so......but not many
    n if i bought him one i dont think he'd mind:rolleyes:

the ice cream man round where I used to live dealt drugs out of his van, thinking back and all these shady looking people queuing up and he'd be telling them to let the kids get served first. He was eventually caught, he used to do two runs a day and in the winter he'd be coming around even still at about 9.30

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,597 ✭✭✭anniehoo

I only noticed this recently and thought it was so odd. One van is going around at the most random times, 4.30pm-ish when it's nearly dark, drizzlin and freezing. I'd barely go outside if my car was gettin robbed let alone to get a feckin 99

As for the drugs thing, the local Gardaí would hear ours from the station they're that close, so hardly inconspicuous.

You've clearly never gone on a GTA rampage in an ice cream van and then visited the local pay'n'spray to drop the heat :pac:

Rain, Hail or snow our local Mr. Whippy does his rounds, it would be pissing rain
with not a soul in sight in the neighbourhood and he would still come around a few times a week.
